The story behind historic preservation

Phil Luciano does a fairly good job
of getting both sides
of the dispute over whether Trinity Lutheran Church should be able to
evict tenants at the Roanoke Apartments so it can build a day care
center. The correct position is, of course, that property owners should
be able to do whatever they want. It’s their property after all. [...]

Phil Theobald to retire

Phil Theobald got on my nerves.
Back in 1981, a freshman at Illinois Central College, I was answered
phones in the Journal Star sports department. I was one of a half dozen
or so college-age kids who took sports scores from coaches calling the
paper after their football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, etc., games
were completed. Sometimes were were allowed to [...]

At my last party, I served Doritos and Diet Coke

? /Journal Star/: Booze and cocaine party leads to tattooing of teen

/A 22-year-old man faces criminal charges after a 15-year-old
Metamora girl was repeatedly tattooed during a bizarre party
involving alcohol and drugs.
The teenager, who reportedly told people at the party [...]

I have a huge pipe

I mean, it was /huge/ before. But its double its normal size now.
Get your minds out of the gutter, people. I’m not looking at the Paris
Hilton video.
I just upgraded from 524 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps of blistering broadband speed.
According to this little chart at toast.net,
I am into T1 range.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

/Another/ new Heinlein novel!

This great news was posted on alt.fan.heinlein:
/Brethren and sistren,
I’ve been saying for thirty years now that shared joy increases. If so,
we’re all gonna be neck-deep in the stuff in a second.
I am collaborating on a novel with Robert A. [...]

More wisdom from Dr. Cline

From Rhetorica :
/Objectivity, illusory or otherwise, never stopped anyone from
disbelieving inconvenient or uncongenial reports. Bias, as in an
ideological filter (that we apparently are unable to thwart), now
offers us a decidedly convenient excuse to fail to deal with
[...]

Thanks for the money

As someone who hopes to be a full-time teacher in a few years, I hope
that everything I read in today’s A Random Act of Kindness
is true. If
so: Thanks taxpayers!

Roeper gets it right

Richard Roeper’s column
about
Irv Kupcinet’s, the late Chicago Sun-Times columnist better known as
“Kup,” is the best I’ve read so far.
I liked this paragraph:
/The thing about Kup was, he was generous. Ask some columnists or
reporters for a contact number or a favor and they’ll look at you
[...]

Finally, some some details about Heart of Peoria plan

Although it’s still obvious that /Journal Star/ reporter Jennifer Davis
has bought into the new Heart of Illinois plan unveiled Tuesday
, this article
contains, for the first time, some actual details about the proposal.
First, the creator says that there will need to be private investment,
the city likely will have to “sweeten the pot.” That’s what the city [...]

Finding a job is a mixed blessing

Because one of my co-workers — a nice guy, otherwise — is one of those
black-helicopter people
John Malone talks about. He complains loudly that President Bush stole
the election. He jokes that he is going to write a book called “The
President Who Ran” — a dig at Bush for not flying to the White House
immediately upon [...]

Calling the phone company?

Here’s some advice:
1. When asked for your phone number, /give them the damn phone number/.
We need your phone number because that’s how we track customers. Also,
start with the damn area code. You would be surprised by how many
people, when asked for their area code, will give their zip code. When
this happens to me, I say, [...]
