? /Journal Star/: Cat, UAW extend contract

/Neither side would comment beyond the news releases and would not
discuss what issues remain on the bargaining table.

News about the extension didn’t surprise UAW members who waited for
news at the Local 974 union hall in East Peoria as the deadline
approached.

Union members were generally tight-lipped about what would come out
of negotiations even after word came about the contract extension.
But they said it’s a good sign that talks will continue.

Negotiations on a new contract began Dec. 10 – far earlier than
normal – when they met for a few hours at the Hotel Pere Marquette
in Downtown Peoria. Subsequent talks all have been held at
Caterpillar Building CV in East Peoria.

But bargaining has been done in secret, without any news releases or
even updates for union members. Other than acknowledging at the
beginning that health-care costs likely would be the biggest issue,
neither side has discussed the issues or demands./
