JS electorial math sometimes doesn’t add up

Monday, February 28th, 2005

Jennifer Davis takes a look at the precinct-by-precinct voting and concludes that Barbara Van Auken, who got six percentage points more votes than incumbent Marcella Teplitz is the one who faces an uphill battle, not Teplitz.
It is probably good for Van Auken’s campaign to be running in “underdog” mode, because one never knows what could […]

Something horrible has happened …

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

… I just discovered that my parents are addicted to NASCAR. My brother has corrupted them, apparently.
I don’t get it.
I’ve got the strategy all worked out already. “Turn left. Turn left. Turn left. Stop for gas. Turn left. Turn left …”
This disproves the theory that only mindless, red-state Republican voters watch NASCAR. My parents are […]

I’m very disappointed in Jerry Klein

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

The legendary Journal Star columnist and critic-at-large today
penned a commentary about the small audiences at Opera Illinois performances at the Peoria Civic Center.
There’s nothing wrong with the column, except that Jerry failed to live up to his obligation as a journalist and insert an obvious cliche. Somewhere in the body or the headline (whish […]

Local heroes

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

Copley Press reports that Army Staff Sgt. Daniel G. Gresham, 23, a resident of nearby Lincoln, Ill., was killed while was disarming a bomb Thursday in Iraq.
Also, Army Spc. Jacob C. Palmatier, 29, of Springfield, was killed outside Baghdad by a roadside bomb.
My condolences to their families and friends.

Mike Bailey has really annoyed me this time …

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

… by giving me something to think about. Just last week, I wouldn’t have thought that likely.
I normally would scoff at the idea that the Peoria area needs another airport. After all, they can’t keep carriers flying into the Greater Peoria Airport, which is located in Bartonville, slightly west of Peoria.
But Bailey presented a […]

Urban sprawl problems not addressed in county’s wish list

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

I can’t really argue with the $62 million “wish list” of projects of that Peoria County developed. The county would like to get funding from the state and federal governments for the stuff on this list. I’ll remind readers that federal money is not found money, it’s the money you and I send in […]

At least BTK killer wasn’t gay

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

Because then the Boy Scouts of America would be really embarassed. It’s bad enough the guy they arrested was a Cub Scout leader. He was also a government employee who reveled in getting his neighbors cited for ordinance violations.

JS gives glowing review of TIF project

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

The Journal Star’s article is a mostly glowing review of the Spring Grove subdivison located in Southtown. It was built with Tax Increment Financing (TIF) money, meaning the property taxes from the $125,000 to $190,000 homes there belong entirely to the city, no the school district or anyone else.
Reporter Pam Adams mentions that Gary […]

Willy remaing anonymous

Saturday, February 26th, 2005

I’ve been speculating about the identity of the outrageous new Peoria blogger, Willy Nilly. He/she/it/they won’t fess up has responded, but still won’t spill the beans.

Alert the media: JS discovers that its beloved Sears block project is not a done deal

Saturday, February 26th, 2005

Although virtually every Peoria media outlet has been guilty of boosterism for the downtown museum/Caterpillar visitors center, none more so than the Journal Star.
The most offensive part of this boosterism is how the media, again and again, writes how the project is a done deal, and that’s it now time to start calling the project […]

Welcome to Dave Ransburg’s Peoria

Saturday, February 26th, 2005

The ever-gorgeous Angie took a drive down Knoxville Avenue recently and didn’t like what she saw: A bunch of boarded up restaurants, but thriving payday and title loan businesses.

Screw MSNBC!

Saturday, February 26th, 2005

MSNBC is dead to me. I’m sick of the floating, music-playing pop-up ads that clog my computer ever time I visit their site. I made the mistake of trying to read one of their articles, and this damn full-page pop-up for Qwest came up, with some annoying music playing full blast thanks to my having […]

I’m not a virgin any more

Friday, February 25th, 2005

Actually, the entire River City Times lost its cherry this week. And it’s all my fault.
You see, I had covered Tuesday night’s election returns and wrote a very long, thought-provoking essay on politics in good old River City.
I emailed it to the editor and went to bed. Two days later, I pick up a copy […]

Alert the media: A Kennedy doesn’t like G.W.

Friday, February 25th, 2005

There’s too many in the damn brood to keep track of, but this particular one came to Peoria to complain about Bush’s environmental policies.
He complained about how unfair the media is to liberals. Which is ironic, considering the fact the media covered the event only because he’s a liberal Kennedy.
And it’s not just the media. […]

Alert the media: A GOP congressman endorses another GOP congressman from the same state

Friday, February 25th, 2005

U.S. Rep Jerry Weller of Morris has endorsed U.S. Rep Ray LaHood of Peoria, who isn’t OFFICIALLY running for governor of Illinois, just doing everything you do if you ARE running for governor of Illinois — namely, travel the state making promises to big-wigs in exchange for endorsements.
There is nothing in this article that indicates […]
