JS: Look in the mirror

Phil Luciano wrote earlier this week that more reporters need to stop working the phones and going to meetings and start going out and talk to and meet the people they are writing about. Today, he prints some of the reaction he gotten from other memers of the media.
There’s no indication anyone from the [...]

Kevin has a new site

I’ve been annoyed at Peoria Blogger Kevin Reynen for weeks because he hadn’t been updating his blog. Apparently, I didn’t get the memo. He’s got a new site: SIDEWALK Theory.
And check out his database of newspapers with RSS feeds. The Southern Illinoisan is the only state newspaper on the list, which actually doesn’t surprise me.

Alert the media!

Apparently WHOI didn’t get the message. The Krispy Kreme fad is over! Fini! Kaput! The once-trendy donut chain is not on anyone’s “hot” list anymore. The public has wised up to the fact that that they don’t taste any better than any other donut. The fact that Krispy Kreme has vomited forth a store [...]

Bad news for Brenkman, taxpayers

WMBD reports that Mayor Dave Ransburg says that the Surface Transportation Board is ruling against Pioneer Railcorp owner Guy Brenkman, who’s fighting efforts turn viable commercial railway into a walking trail.

JS discovers eminent domain issue

Better late than never I suppose. For quite some time now, I’ve been writing about a U.S. Supreme Court case that might end with the City of Peoria losing the ability to sieze peoples’ homes for economic development projects. Here is is, two full days after the court heard oral arguments, the Journal Star [...]

A hot cup of debate

Dave at The Eleventh Hour and I are engaging in a little debate over tort reform and the infamous hot-coffee lawsuit against McDonalds. He thinks there’s more to the case than tort reform backers who have made it their poster child would care to admit. I am, however, setting him straight.

Post deleted

I got another spanking from Barbara VanAuken. I had completely confused mediation, which is something the city and 200 union workers are seeking to help them settle a dispute, and binding arbitration, which is what happened in the city’s dispute with cops over residency.
They are two completely different animals. The original post was unfixable, so [...]

The Journal Star needs it own recount

Heh.
I’ve made math mistakes in print, too, so I am not going to chortle over the fact that Jennifer Davis reported that Frank Lewis finished 19 voted behind second place finisher Greg Banks in the 1st district Peoria City Council race.
Lets see — Banks finished with 230 votes and Lewis finished with 221. That means [...]

Convicted child molester roaming free in Peoria … but that’s OK, he’s an attorney

State’s attorney Kevin Lyons is “stunned and disgusted” that Robert Becker is being allowed to roam free while he appeared his conviction for sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl. The appealate court also won’t reveal who signed the order, which also includes removal of his electronic monitoring bracelet.
The article (in a nice piece of reporting) says [...]

Moore rolling dice on a recount

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and chatting with June Moore after Tuesday’s election. She finished in third place in the race for 1st District representative on the Peoria City Council. She received just three votes less than the guy who finished second.
WHOI is reporting that members of the community talked her into [...]

Tobacco settlement goes up in smoke

Merle Widmer has been under the weather, but he’s back with three posts this week, including this one, in which he applauds tort reform, and calls the infamous settlement between states and the tobacco industry “one off the greatest legal frauds of all times.”
Absolutely right.
Illinois at first took that money and created a fantastic tobacco [...]

Put the thing out of its misery

If WEEK isn’t going to update The WEEK Link, why don’t they just delete it?
Or pay me to do it.

The mystery of Willy Nilly deepens …

Exactly who is this guy? People ask if I am Willy. Some of the people who ask me his identity are themselves suspects.
What are the clues?
1. He doesn’t like Mayor Dave Ransburg, Ray LaHood, Aaron Schock, or David Leitch. Yet Willy wasn’t a particular fan of Ricca Slone, either.
2. He knows a lot of inside [...]

More linky goodness

The The Eleventh Hour is another Illinois blog, apparently, that’s linked to me twice, including this post about the GOP’s outrage at the governor’s habit of spending his nights in Chicago.

Any needy millionare developers out there?

WMBD radio reports that the city of Peoria finds itself with $3 million more than its budgeted for itself, thanks mostly to an unexpected increase in sales tax revenue.
I would never call this “found” money (it’s tax revenue, after all, which means the city found it in taxpayers’ wallets). But it is unexpected, and [...]
