‘F*cking spics’ not welcome at Peoria Notre Dame
March 31, 2005 in The Wire
Edgar Sandoval today discusses the vulgar, obscene and racist taunts directed at the underage girls he coaches at Pekin High School.
The perps were apparently students, and not parents. Thank God.
I have to be honest with Eric and say I’ve heard as bad or worse comments come from Pekin students and parents back in the days I attended Woodruff High School. I was involved in the wrestling program, and Pekin had the best program in the area at that time. There were racist taunts directed at my teammates every single time we wrestled against them.
And there wasn’t any effort made to punish those involved.
But that was 20 years ago.
But it doesn’t surprise me that this nonsense is going on at Notre Dame. After all, it’s the school of choice for Peoria-area residents who don’t want their children to attend school with black people.
I covered sports for a small school south of Champaign, which made it my job to have to travel to Schlarman High School in Danville to cover boys and girls basketball games. The school encouraged all manner of vulgarity and rowdiness that would have resulted in suspensions at virtually any public school in Illinois. I know it was encouraged, because priests, teachers and administrators stood by, heard it and witnessed it, and did nothing game after game. Complaints about their behavior accomplished nothing.
I came to the conclusion then that Catholic educators were bigots and elitists and certainly completely disinterested in applying Christian principles to their schools, nor in teaching their students how to be Christians, other than haranguing them daily to oppose all abortions.
Nothing I have seen or heard about Notre Dame High School makes me think any differently.
If the people who run NDHS want people to think that they offer a Christian educational experience, they need to start acting like Christians in public.
UPDATE: Hat-tip to Rob, who gave me a link to a short Pekin Times article about the incident.

Eric? Who’s Eric?
I don’t think you need another post written about you getting his name wrong…
Try and get it right Bob.

I must have some sort of mental block or something where EDGAR’S name is concerned. He is simply going to have to change it …;-)

Sounds like Edgar is a p-whipped wuss who needs to grow a backbone. Competition builds character. Any Christian will tell you how important it is to turn the other cheek, i.e., call me anything you want, since I could care less. Wait until these youths try to make it in the dog-eat-dog business world, or even worse, the military. If they’re not prepared to get their feelings trampled on at times, they’re not going to succeed at anything. Learning how to accept and handle these taunts can make the youths stronger, i.e., if the coach impresses this notion upon them. With all that said, PND will always be considered as Bergan’s armpit to this Spalding grad…

Tell me, Norman, would you approve if your kids were made to go through a gauntlet of people yelling comments about their breasts, their asses, their sexual habits and their skin color, simply because they *dared* to play an away sporting event? No? Howabout I come over to *your* house tonight — or the home of any young teenage girl in your family — and do my best to “build character” in the manner you just declared is completely appropriate for that purpose? Or would you call the police?
These are minor children we are talking about. All they want to do is play soccer.

Coming from a man who can’t admit in public that Che Guevara killed people for the crime of being Christians, and who defends others who make anti-semitic remarks, your criticism of others on bigotry and religion rings more than a little hollow, Bill.

Dean, I dismissed you as a silly twit with a stick up his ass several posts ago. What are you doing still reading my blog? Go away and quit bothering me …

I must have been away from Peoria for too long. Pekinites are now having racial slurs hurled at them? My goodness. Is Pekin getting diverse these days?
And as for PND students, I thought that they were far too snobbish to be *overtly* racist. One would have thought their parents would have endeavored to bring them up with a sort of genteel, only-after-six-o’clock-with-a-martini-in-hand racism…

Racial slurs directed at people from Pekin? Whats next? Will the Notre Dame soccer team stop a Klan rally with racial slurs hurled at the grand dragon? Notre Dame plays Woodruff and Central all the time…… not a word about racial slurs at those games… surely there would have been repercusions if there had been. Could the “slurs” perhaps have been a reference to kids poking fun at the old nickname “chinks” ?

look i go to NDHS.
and we didnt make racist jokes or stuff like that at pekin. we make fun of them for being racist. like the chant p-e-kkk-i-n. we have quite a few black people that go to our school. some of which are responsible for our state championship.

Jordan, when you grow up, you will realize that you don’t make fun of racism by calling girls spics and making crude sexual comments about them.
The coach at Pekin isn’t lying about what he heard and saw.
You people are old enough to know better and you need to stop lying about what happened. I’m not your mommy or daddy. I’m not inclined to believe the lies you told them to stay out of trouble.
And back in the day, we call it the “but some of my best friends are black” defense. And it didn’t work then, either.

if any prejudices occur its from pekin…pnd has students of all races including athletes of all races/ there will always be one or two from any school with name calling but to classify it as the whole school is ridiculous

Yea I like how you forgot to add the part in there about the pekin girls flipping off our fans and yelling curse words at them.
