A little advice on instant messaging …

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

Suppose I wanted to have an instant messaging program running while I was on the air tomorrow. Whcih one allows for use by the most people? I find that I cannot send back and forth between AOL and Yahoo. Should I try MSN?
Any advice from readers would be appreciated.

Give the man a medal

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

So, it turns out that W. Mark Felt is Deep Throat (r.r.)*
It shoots my pet theory all to Hell. In retrospect, I think I was a little harsh in my assessment that Deep Throat would have to be a craven, cowardly character (sneaking around in dark parking garages). Perhaps it was better that Nixon suffered […]

Dump this letter on the dustbin of history

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

Methinks this letter writer has been reading too much Marx and not enough modern history:
Because the concept of God implies the abdication of human reason and justice, religion is the natural ally of every form of oppression and exploitation and a source of income to pious parasites that prey on those who pray.
Maybe we ought […]

Domestic horror

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

We can pontificate all we want about invading ganbangers, but the person most likley to kill you is still the person looking across the breakfast table at you in the morning. This seems to be the case here.

Filthy Peoria lets kids swim in sewage

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

The Journal Star’s Elaine Hopkins reports that heavy rains cause raw sewage from Peoria’s ancient drainage system to pollute the Illinois River. The crap flows into the river at 16 different places from Darst to Spring Street.
Hey folks! Guess what’s located at the foot of Spring Street! Detweiller Marina and Detweiller Park. Last time […]

There is truth in humor

Monday, May 30th, 2005

I’ve been trying to explain to a commenter why any study contending that banning guns might saves lives by preventing accidental shootings.
This cartoon, which I found at Ravenswood Universe, shows why. If words don’t work, perhaps a drawing will.

Humor aside, take away the very possibility that the homeowner answering the door may be armed, and […]

Remembering Rick Baker

Monday, May 30th, 2005

Sorry James. I don’t play blogger tag or other versions of Blogosphere chain letters. But I do appreciate the link.
But I do notice from that post that Mr. Landrith lists Rick Baker’s “Baker’s Best” as one of the most influential books he has read.
As I’ve said before, I agree.
I constantly find myself comparing myself […]

Thanks for nothing, U.S. tells widow of Iraq hero

Monday, May 30th, 2005

The U.S. government is poised to send back to Kosova the widow of a man who was killed while training the Iraqi security forces. Because the guy was a private contractor, and not actually a member of the U.S. military, the Feds won’t even consider her application for U.S. residency. I say the guy was […]

Political crooks learn from example

Monday, May 30th, 2005

Last week, the Journal Star’s editoral board asked if Illinlis was inherently corrupt. Nah. It’s a learned behavior. And they learn it from our schools:
James Levin, a friend of former President Bill Clinton and a Democratic fundraiser, testified last month that he engaged in a minority contract fraud scheme and bribery.
Levin has not been charged […]

Durbin seeking safe rock to hide behind till November 2006

Monday, May 30th, 2005

ILPundit says that Sen Dick Durbin’s “stock just went up” because he didn’t discourage fellow Democrats from challenging Gov. Blagojevich in the primary.
His stock went up with whom? Republican voters? Don’t think so. Democrats? If Blago wins the primary — which he probably will because he’s the incumbent — then Durbin comes across as a […]

Oliver’s maneuvering would leave neighborhoods less protected

Monday, May 30th, 2005

Jennifer Davis reports in today’s Word on the Street column that the plan to hire Pat Landes as assistant city manager and merge her Planning and Growth Department with the Economic Development Department is “up in the air,” to use Davis’ words. Does this mean Landes is officially not the assistant city manager?
It’s obvious […]

The city council is doing me no favors

Sunday, May 29th, 2005

I’m going on the radio to talk about local politics (4:30 p.m. Wednesday on WXCL 104.9). So what does the Peoria City Council they do? They don’t schedule a meeting on Tuesday! Where I am supposed to get my gossip? The excuse? Some nonsense about how they never schedule meetings on fifth Tuesdays of […]

Peoria pols pan pro-slumlord policy — mostly

Sunday, May 29th, 2005

Local officials and neighborhood groups are agitating against Senate Bill 1727, which would require the consent of both landlords and tenants prior to a residential inspection. Even home rule cities like Peoria would have to comply.
In the Illinois Senate, George Shadid voted against it, while Dale Risinger voted in favor of it. State reps. […]
