Abuse at the Grandview

Monday, October 31st, 2005

WEEK has reported on a story to which I alluded in a previous post.
Residents of the the Grandview Hotel have told me — and now WEEK — that former owner Kris Jain often solicited tenents and hotel employees for sex in exchange for lowered rent. I heard of one guest who was told she would […]

Bad news: PEORIA TV Blog comes to an end.

Monday, October 31st, 2005

Jeff has decided to close up the PEORIA TV Blog.
He’s even taken down the archives, which I think is a mistake.
I’m very sorry to see his blog close. As I recall, he closed the site once before, then decided to start it back up again.
I think Jeff did a fine job running an obective site […]

Bye, bye Monica

Monday, October 31st, 2005

WHOI’s Monica Landeros is leaving the River City for colder and cheesier climes — she’s taken a job with WLUK Fox 11 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. She starts there on Nov. 28th. Her last day on Peoria television is probably going to be Nov. 14.
Too bad. I like her. She’s a fellow Star Trek junkie.

Another 2nd Amendment success story

Monday, October 31st, 2005

When a knucklehead waves a gun around and cops surround his house, it’s on the front page. When a Mossville business owner uses his 2nd amendment right to defend his property and safety, it’s buried in the bottom of a police and fire roundup somewhere deep inside the paper:
Taylor Lewis, 58, was still in bed […]

Alito seems a good choice

Monday, October 31st, 2005

At first blush, Samuel Alito seems a good choice for the U.S. Supreme Court.
He’s got a ton of Federal appelate court expereience and he’s argued 12 cased before SCOTUS.
His temperment is better than many now serving. His decisions on abortion rights lean heavilly toward the pro-life side of the aisle, but not overwhelmingly so. Pro-choicers […]

Monday media round up

Monday, October 31st, 2005

Journal Star: Cat sets out vision for growth
Caterpillar Inc. plans to reach $50 billion in sales by the end of 2010 and is putting a strategy in place that could double that figure - and nearly double employment - by 2020.
And for some reason no one can explain, their stock price will be even lower […]

Welcome Zorn readers

Monday, October 31st, 2005

It appears that I’ve received a mention on Eric’s Weblog, “Change of Subject.” Eric has always been a friend of this site, and I appreciate today’s linkage. And I forgive him for shamelessly jumping on the White Sox bandwagon.
In fact, I take credit for the fact that Zorn’s site is as good as it is. […]

Don’t laugh …

Monday, October 31st, 2005

Ozzie and his son celebrate.
I love my Dad, too. But I have never, ever kissed him on the lips.

The first step in fighting worldwide predatory fascism is to admit that it exists

Monday, October 31st, 2005

I was watching CNN when blogger Glenn Reynolds and journalist Roger Simon were providing perspective on on the media’s response to the 2,000 American military deaths in Iraq.
Glenn made note of Rand Simberg’s brilliant parody of the the media coverage, by resetting it during World War II on the occasion of the 250,000th death in […]

A cure for jailing journalists?

Monday, October 31st, 2005

I’m not the only one with serious qualms about Patrick Fitzgerald jailing journalists to advance the highly political Plame investigation:
Under the shield law now pending in Congress, Fitzgerald conceivably could have made that argument stick. But he would either have had to establish that outing a source could “prevent imminent and actual harm to […]

Kudos to Zorn

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

I don’t like the White Sox. But I like loudmouth sports columnists even less.
Good take down, Eric.

UPDATE: I’ve been trying to fix a spelling error on this blog for four hours! But the computer in the WXCL studio kept spitting out gibberish code when it tried. Done now, until someone finds a new one.
I […]

Fond auto memories

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

Just like the pope, I used to drive a Ford Escort. I loved that little car. It was beige. It was the first and only new car I’ve ever owned.

J.S. op/ed page argues against free speech

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

Jeffrey M. McCall, a professor of communication at DePauw University, makes strained comparison when arguing against protecting reporters:
High-profile complainers create confusion when they try to assert free speech rights that are not provided by the First Amendment. For example, metal band Motley Crue sued NBC last year after the network banned the group from future […]

RIP: The Crusher

Saturday, October 29th, 2005

Dick the Bruiser. Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. “Mad Dog” Vachon. Superstar Billy Graham. Vern Gagne. Nick Bockwinkle. Baron von Raschke. I loved watching AWA Wrestling on Saturday (or was it Sunday?) afternoons with my brother. During commercials, we’d take turns trying to put “The Claw”– the most devastating submission hold in wresting, then or since […]
