More drama at the Grandview tomorrow?

I received the following email from Chase Ingersoll just a few minutes ago. It looks like there might be some arrests made tomorrow at the Grandview. At least there will if this family is indeed made homeless.
I never thought that just because all the residents left the Grandview Hotel yesterday that this mess was over. […]

No state money for Daley stadium boondoggle

Let’s make this perfectly clear: There is no way in Hell that downstate taxpayers should pay one thin dime to build a 80,000 seat domes stadium in Chigago. I don’t care if it’s for a bid to host the Olympic Games, a second NFL team or both.
The Olympics have evolved from a charming exhibition […]

Powered armor update

We’re getting closer, but we’re not producing “Starship Troopers”-style armor yet:
Of course, the Roughnecks in the title would be the ones from either Robert Heinlein’s book Starship Troopers, or the cartoon (Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles), which was made after the horrible Paul Verhoeven film, not the film itself, which depicted the soldiers without powered armor […]

All’s quiet on the Grandview front

I stopped by the Grandview this morning.
By the time I arrived at 11:30 a.m., virtually all the residents had moved out. Some had been planning to stay and make the police drag them out. But cooler heads prevailed — perhaps in part because a bunch of social service agencies came through at the last minute. […]

Half-assed praise for Luciano

Phil Luciano’s column yesterday was the best he’e ever written. Of course, disgruntled gas station owner Terry Beachler wrote half of it.
Seriously, it was funny stuff.

A bad day for Peoria

Today is the day.
There are no motions pending. The city administration says that it will enforce Judge John Barra’s order to close the Grandview Hotel. New owner Chase Ingersoll is out of town. Some of the residents imply they won’t leave on their own.
My advice: Don’t resist. Leave. Work with agencies like the YWCA to […]

Apologies, clarifications and corrections

First: It’s been pointed out to me that not everyone living next to the Grandview Hotel lives in an expensive home. I’ve sort of implied — actually stated outright — that the city is sucking up to the rich by closing the Grandview. That’s not accurate, and I apologize.
Second: City Council member Bob Manning has […]

Fight gangs in the inner city? Nah … the city’s too busy making people homeless

Were I not a fair-minded person, I would make a snarky comment about the City of Peoria being hot and heavy to close a hotel with a non-existant crime problem while making residents of the East Bluff wait for the city’s help closing a crime infected walkway. After all, I’ve been hearing complaints about he […]

Gun quote of the year

… an ordinance that seeks to reduce the murder rate by disarming those owners who are not criminals makes about as much sense as fighting alcoholism by prohibiting beer sales to Mormons.

A proposed compromise for the Grandview

Just off the top of my head, a compromise could take the following form:

Chase stops contesting the closure and agrees that the city has the right to enforce the judges’ rulings.
The city administration declines to order the Peoria Police Department to haul citizens out.
Chase agrees to remove anyone who wasn’t living at the Grandview prior […]

Grandview to close on Friday?

Granted, I’m not the finest legal mind in the world. My experience is limited to two undergraduate courses in communication law and Constitutional law. But the reasoning give for denying Chase Ingersoll’s latest bid to keep the Grandview Hotel open seem valid. Chase hoped to use a a technicality in federal Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection […]

Second Amendment in action

Dallas Morning News: Dallas store clerk shoots robbery suspect
A convenience store clerk shot a man who was trying to rob the store Tuesday afternoon in Old East Dallas.
About 1:45 p.m., two men entered a Shell convenience store off Interstate 30 near Winslow Avenue and began to act suspiciously, police said.
When the clerk saw one man […]

Open Thread Wednesday

The response to my last open thread was good. Here’s another topic for discussion: Which local unit of government has the most effective chief administrator. State why, and give examples. Conversely, who is the least effective.
