Peoria Pundit on WCBU tonight

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

There’s no Peoria City Council meeting tonight, so Johnathon Ahl will run a special edition of “Outside the Horseshoe.” He’s going to replay Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis’ “State of the City” address, after which C.J. Summers and I will offer commentary.
It all starts at 7 p.m. on WCBU 89.9 FM.

Peoria now behind the wireless curve

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

I’ve been urging Peoria to get ahead of the curve and initiate a city-wide wireless broadband Internet service. It’s becoming increasingly clear that it’s becoming a case of avoiding failling too far behind the curve. Rockford is already doing what we here in River City are only beginning to talk about.
Welcome to the hot […]

Give ‘em Hell, LaVetta

Monday, January 30th, 2006

Today’s Word on the Street column in the Journal Star takes a look at Mayor Jim Ardis’ ’state of the city” speech. Quite wisely, the column addresses the speech from the point of view of LaVetta Ricca, president of the Old Town South Neighborhood Association.

Peoria’s WiFi needs not comparable to Milwaukee system

Monday, January 30th, 2006

Several people sent me a link to this about about municipal wireless system in Milwaukee. I’m not really all that impressed:

It’s time to consolidate Peoria and Dunlap schools

Monday, January 30th, 2006

Dave Haney has a nice article on the spiffy new remodeling project at Dunlap High School. The article also discusses plans for future growth at the district. Here’s the problem, while the Village of Dunlap is an autonomous municipality, the “Dunlap” school system is served people who live in and around Dunlap and in the […]

If Blago suggests a road trip, hide the car keys

Monday, January 30th, 2006

Remember that scene from “Animal House” where Stratton (Tim Matheson) is trying to console Dorfman (Stephen Furst), who foolishly let the gang use his brother’s car for a road trip, only to see it damaged?
“Hey, you f***** up! You trusted us!”
That’s Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s message to anyone stupid enough to believe him:

Brian Alexander fundraiser honors murder victim

Sunday, January 29th, 2006

For those who Brian Alexander is an East Bluff resident who was shot and murdered outside him home on Dec. 19, 2004. The man’s family has been very frustrated at the seeming lack of progress in this case.
Don’t give up! It’s harder to solve murders this long after they happen, but the more awareness there […]

JS takes a bold step into the digital age

Sunday, January 29th, 2006

The Journal Star has discovered something a lot of newspapers knew a decade ago: You can run editorial cartoons on the Internet:
The beauty of the Internet, of course, is that space is not a limitation, as it is in our print edition, where there’s room for only one cartoon a day. Readers now will get […]

Peoria will win big if ’state of the city’ plans see the light of day

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

I missed Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis’ “State of the City” speech this week. I’m sorry I did, because it’s obvious that there’s going to be some significant changes in Peoria, and many of them for the better.

Museum Square should be redesigned to be more affordable

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

Several months ago, City Council member Gary Sandberg questioned the design of underground parking envisioned for the Museum Square project. He was worried about the cost of making it structurally sound.
Guess what? He was right. It’s going to cost an additional $2.5 million to $3 million:

Civic Center mooches never seem to learn

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

Someone wants to build a new hotel next to the Peoria Civic Center. Of course, they want taxpayers to give them some money to do it:

Oh, great! There’s more competition:
I figure Polly, Willy, Vonster and, of course, the Pundit shouldn’t get to have all the fun.
‘Of course, the Pundit …”
Heh. I like that.
Welcome to the blogosphere.
