More OSF woes

February 8, 2006 in William Dennis Tags: ,

Not five minutes ago, I got a phone call from OSF wanting to speak to my Dad. to schedule some tests. Their records have my phone number instead of his. I have told these people many, many times to please correct the number. Dad’s private doctor — affiliated with OSF — does the same thing.

Nothing I or Dan can do will get these people to call him instead of me. It’s like this wrong phone number has been chisseled in stone into his permanent file.

I can’t help but wonder how in the Hell an organization like OSF can expect to administer medication properly when they they don’t have the cumulative IQ necessary to get write down the correct phone number when they’ve been given it at least a dozen times. At least twice since his heart operation, they’ve given him medication that made him worse, so maybe that’s why.

I’ve begged my folks to please find a new doctor. OSF is more bogged down with bureaucracy than the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

I am scared to death that these people will kill my parents.

I assume that OSF has electronic record keeping. Under that assumption, follow this script he next time this happens (assuming you haven’t done this already):

Bill:I am not ____ Dennis, I am his son, Bill Dennis. This is the eleventieth time you’ve called me looking for him, so please excuse my tone. What I want you to do right now is find a piece of paper and a pen and write down the following number. Do you have the paper and pen?

Office lackey: [answers in the affirmative]

Bill: Good. Now write down this number [Bill's dad's phone number]. Repeat that number back to me.

Office lackey: [spews back correct number]

Bill: Excellent. Now, enter that number on my father’s medical records under his phone number.

    Office lackey: [taps on keyboard]

Bill: Accept the changes, do whatever to set it right. Now, call up the record again.

    Office lackey: [complains]

Bill: I don’t care - OSF can’t seem to get this right, so I’m making sure it didn’t get screwed up again. Call up the record now.

Office lackey: [calls up the record] Okay, now what?

Bill: Look at the entry for my dad’s phone number. Read me the number there.

Office lackey: [reads off the number]

Bill:[if number is correct, politely end the conversation. if number is incorrect, ask to be transfered to the head of the medical records department, and have him/her solve the problem].

If you’ve done all this before, have fun going postal.
