Everyone’s a critic

March 28, 2006 in Citizen Journalism Tags: , , ,

As someone who dishes it out, I can’t complain too much about criticism directed at me.

But I liked the theme with the black background. I thought it was nifty. I know for a fact that some of these nattering nabobs of negativism visit other sites with similar color schemes and didn’t leave comments about wanting to vomit. There’s no accounting for taste, I suppose.

But I want to PLEASE my audience. So I spent a full hour last night changing the color scheme around.

This is why I’ve been switching themes so much recently. The theme I had been using for a while, called Contempt, turned out to be incompatible with a plugin that I was using. I needed to use something based on the traditional “Kubrick” Word Press default theme. I went back to modified version of the three-column Kubrick design I had been using back when I had the site absolutely loaded down with advertisements. I never intended to keep that theme, and I said so at the time. It was held together with spit and bailing wire from a design perspective.

It was always my intent to switch to something a little more elegant that was not only based on Kubrick but also capable if displaying a lot of links and categories. I came across the “black three-column Letterhead” theme by accident. I loaded it into my system and made some adjustments and left for work. It looked wonderful on my computer. Bear in mind that I have a 21-inch monitor, a decent graphics card and the Firefox browser

When I got to work and saw the site rendered on a 15-inch monitor using Internet Explorer and suddenly it didn’t look so wonderful. I knew that some folks were going to complain about readability. And for the next eight hours, I received comments and emails complaining about it. I should be happy, I suppose, because complaints mean people are reading the site. When I got home, I immediately began adjusting the style sheets to turn what was black white and what was white black. I’m still not done.

And the result is what you see now.

So I hope you so-and-sos are happy.

But one of the critics gave me an idea. If I ever need to raise a lot of money quick, I’m going to reload the original “black three-column Letterhead” theme and refuse to take it down until I get reach my goal in donations.

You are obviously a man of refined tastes.

Since I see you’re into Latin now, I’ll just say this about your theme changes:

    Ne quid nimis.

The white background is fine and probably just a tad easier to read, but I REALLY liked the look of the black background. Biger font size helped to be able to read the words. But, a popular guy has to bow to the majority!
