Merit pay plan doesn’t go far enough

I didn’t attend tonight’s City Council meeting, but I caught the dog and pony show on public access.
I listened to council members Barbara Van Auken and George Jacob on WCBU’s “Outside the Horseshoe” program explain the process used to arrive at the plan to eliminate “longevity pay” for managers and non-union employees. There was a [...]

Yes, folks, we have another Blog Peoria member

The site is called Problems are for Solving. Here’s an email I received from the new member of the Blog Peoria Project:
Hi, my name is James and I’m the husband of Theresa (of Learning By The Way) and brother-in-law to Raquel (of A Road Less Travelled) and friend to Seth (A Dark and Quiet Room). [...]

Yet another new BlogPeoria blogger

For a few days, Seth Ben-Ezra’s blog was The BlogPeoria Project’s largest in terms of the number of posts. Then a group blog called A Road Less Travelled signed up and they became the biggest blog. I emailed one of the bloggers, Gabrielle, for some details:
I am Seth’s sister actually. I share this blog with [...]

Chef Kevin’s Mom for President in 2008

I just now discovered that Chef Kevin runs another blog: It Just Slays Me. I particularly enjoyed this rant:
Sorry for all the Democrats out there, but I’ve got a pretty darn good idea my mother is a very conservative Republican. Well, she’s very conservative anyway. I think she would start the Frugal Party and her [...]

Boomcar ordinance is worse than the crime

If one hates litter, does it naturally follow that one should support shooting litterbugs on sight? Why should I support a plan to seize private property without benefit of due process because the driver got caught playing a car stereo too loud?
The Peoria City Council will vote on an ordinance that will let police impound [...]

Lane Evans to retire

Rep. Lane Evans (D-17th), who hasn’t been able to cast a vote since Feb. 14 and hasn’t been to his office in more than a month, has told party leaders he will soon announce his retirement from Congress very soon, the Chicago Tribune reported today.
He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1995, when he realized [...]

There’s no waiting for democracy

I recently complained about the danger of having defeated school board members continue to hold office until July.
It seems my fear was well-founded. The election was held last week, and two incumbents were defeated. But the by voting to renew its contract with Edison Schools, the old board essentially thwarted the will of the electorate. [...]

Everyone’s a critic

As someone who dishes it out, I can’t complain too much about criticism directed at me.
But I liked the theme with the black background. I thought it was nifty. I know for a fact that some of these nattering nabobs of negativism visit other sites with similar color schemes and didn’t leave comments about wanting [...]

Luciano might have a double standard for women in combat

JS columnist Phil Luciano interviewed Congressional candidate Tammy Duckworth, and makes note of her stay in Peoria with the National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 106th Aviation Regiment.
The article takes a respectful tone toward Duckworth, considered a rising star in the Democratic Party because of her record as a wounded-in-action Iraq veteran.
But I also seem to recall [...]

A good problem to have, kinda

I’ve been told by my hosting company, A Small Orange, that I have reached 80 percent of my 25 GB banwidth limit for the month. Even though there are just five more days left in the month, I didn’t want to risk the site going dark, so I bought five additional gigs, which shoudl easilly [...]

New BlogPeoria blog

Learning By The Way is a brand-spanking new member of The Blog Peoria Project. I asked Theresa to drop me a line and let us know about herself:
Hi, Bill!
My husband helped me move my blog from blogger after Seth Ben-Ezra moved his. Who knows, maybe this is the beginning of a great exodus of friends [...]

Caterpillar’s ‘gimme’ mentality is killing Peoria

An interesting nugget of information in today’s Word on the Street column:
At-large City Councilman Gary Sandberg has a nice little spreadsheet in which he tracks everything from city, county and Tri-County population to the city’s capital, operating and debt service budgets, with more specific breakdowns on the fire, police and public works budgets.
He did [...]

ISP issues in Peoria

No doubt my hit counts will be down a bit because of slow connection speeds through the state for Insight customers.

Feds reluctantly decide to not deprive bloggers of 1st Amendment rights

I wasn’t going to blog at all this weekend.
I should have known better, because I knew that there was going to be some action this weekend on the efforts by U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood and his buddies in the Democratic Party to regulate political commentary and information on the Internet.
The Federal Election Commission is under [...]
