‘This Old Cub’ at Apollo on June 7

May 30, 2006 in Overset

Area Cub fans tempted to root, root, root for another home team after the Chicago Cubs’ terrible May might regain their die-hard faith by seeing one of Cub fan-dom’s most inspiring movies, “This Old Cub.”

The 2004 documentary is scheduled to show at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at downtown Peoria’s Apollo Theater.

Starring legendary Cub third-baseman Ron Santo, the 86-minute feature was directed by Santo’s son, filmmaker Jeff Santo.

Part nostalgic biography and part revealing report of the physical challenges faced by Santo, who has diabetes, the movie is narrated by actor Joe Mantegna and features other actors — Bill Murray, Dennis Farina, William Petersen, Dennis Franz, Gary Sinise — as well as current and retired Major League ballplayers.

Select short subjects including highlight excerpts from the last World Series game the Cubs ever won (in 1945) will precede the screening.

A small theater with a big screen, the Apollo is a nonprofit corporation where admission is $5 and $4 for seniors and students.

This movie left me with some seriously mixed feelings. Cubs fans, and baseball fans in general will like it, I think.
There really isn’t a point to the movie, except maybe “This is Ron Santo.”

I only know Santo as a broadcaster. He is the fan in the booth. Wish I’d been around to see him play.

Do they still play the blues in Chicago…

and the doormat of the National League…….

Thanks for supporting the Apollo on your site, Bill. Steve Tarter and the volunteers at the theater do a great job bringing a diverse film slate to Peoria. And the theater itself is beautifully restored. Whenever I’m in town I make a point of catching a film there.

Such a great downtown destination almost makes up for the overzealous ticket police. — Almost.

  5. Bill Dennis Says:

My pleasure. I’ve able to get down the the Apollo several times and I’m going to try to make this showing.

My only problem with movies at the Apollo? They are shows via DVD projector, not a movie FILM projector.

  6. C. J. Summers Says:

Yes. Bring back real film. There is a big difference.

….meanwhile, the Cubs - circling the drain again - take two of three (gift wrapped as they were) from the Cards in St. Louis.

I’ve worked with Steve Tarter and Bob Brandis at the Apollo on different projects for the past several years. The Apollo had a film projector system, but ithe maintenance and film costs were prohibitively high. The quality of the image and sound was not always the best, and I believe Bob was the only person who knew how to operate the projector. Since Bob’s retirement and the donations of ICC to the Apollo, the movies shown through the DVD system are actually better in visual and audio quality.
