Well, I’m over my little snit now
May 31, 2006 in Overset
I’m no longer boycotting downtown Peoria or Peoria in general. But I still doubt I’m going to be doing much business downtown.
The boycott didn’t last long. After the Blogger Bash at Whitey’s broke up, some of us headed over the Steak ‘n’ Shake in East Peoria for a bite, but they were horribly understaffed and we ended up at Richard’s on Main. So the boycott lasted less than eight hours.
I’m still think it’s a huge mistake to ticket people for simply because their car is parked next to, rather than behind, a parking meter. The ticket writer has NO knowledge whether the driver did it intentionally or whether he was just taking a parking space as he or she found it. It was certainly evident that I was depriving NO ONE of a parking space.
Overzealous enforcement makes it harder to lure business back to the downtown. Since I’m certainly not going to be parking in a deck simply to buy food from a pushcart, I’m simply not going to be doing as much business downtown now. There simply are not enough open spaces that conform to this extremely stringent enforcement, and I don’t any faith that anyone in a management position in the city can stop thinking like a rule-book-worshiping robot long enough to figure that out, let alone have the skill to direct an employee toward showing a bit more discretion.

You think it’s bad in Peoria, try Pekin. I was inside the courthouse and ran out to my car to move it out of the two hour zone. I parked a block up the street and when I came out there was a ticket because I had parked over one of the lines. I was the only car parked on the block.

Hope the blogger bash went well. Had every intention of attending, but at 6:30 PM, I found my water softner had “blown a gasket” (more like a tube) and was spewing water everywhere. Was still cleaning it up at 10:30 PM. 0 for 2… really want to get to one of these.

It’s against the rules. You broke the rules, you get a ticket.
Why is that hard to understand?
Same goes for those people in East Peoria that complain about getting a ticket for sitting in the middle of the intersection when traffic is backed up. Don’t enter the intersection until you can get through it.
Same goes for speeders on I-74. “It’s not fair that he’s not in uniform” or “What about the other three cars that were speeding too”
You break the rules and get caught, you get a ticket. It’s not difficult.
And how much was the ticket for, Bill? What, $15? Sack up, quite yer bitchin’ and pay it.
