‘Singin’ in the Rain’ on Apollo’s big screen

By Billy Dennis on June 10th, 2006

Summer’s here, and with it a chance of rain — along with an opportunity to see “Singin’ In the Rain” on the big screen.

The 1952 Oscar-nominated film starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor has shown countless times on TV, but the MGM classic was produced to be seen by moviegoers in theaters.

It’s scheduled to show at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 16 and 17

Set in 1928, “Singin’ in the Rain” follows a couple of Hollywood silent-movie stars coping with the arrival talking pictures. Kelly, who co-directed, handled the choreography. Reynolds, in her screen debut, is a great ingenue. O’Connor, drawing on his Vaudeville roots, steals several scenes — highlighted by “Make ‘em laugh.”

Also featuring Jean Hagen, Rita Moreno and Cyd Charisse, the picture is one of the American Film Institute’s Top 100 movies.

It was revived as a live stage musical 10 years ago starring Michael Gruber.

A small theater with a big screen, the Apollo is a nonprofit corporation where admission is $5 and $4 for seniors and students.

    Bill,

Thanks for this post. My Mom suffers from Parkinsons and doesn’t get out of the house much. This happens to be her favorite all time movie. Her B-day happens to fall on June 16th. If you hadn’t written about it, I am quite sure, I would have missed it. We certainly will be attending.

    Thanks

Scott: You are welcome, of course. But the real heroes here are Bill Knight, Steve Tarter and the other folks who work very hard to bring movies to the Apollo. In fact, I’ll forward this comment to Bill K. so he can pass the thanks to all those who REALLY deserve it.

I got the e-mail, and again thanks.
