Chubby’s ready to open in Sunnyland

August 26, 2006
By Billy Dennis

As I’ve reported before, the guy who starting a bar and grill at the site of the former Gaslight II on West Main Street is also behind a similar eatery/drinkery in Sunnyland called “Chubby’s.” My brother, Eric, is running the kitchen at Chubby’s and he reports they are going to start serving foot at 11 a.m. Monday. Eric is one of the better known cooks in Peoria. He recently left his job at The Firehouse on Galena Road for this new gig. Cubby’s is located from the former Wild Bill’s/Uncle Al’s Steakhouse site. As soon as the lazy b*****d gets off his ass and sends me the address, I’ll print it.

Good ole Uncle Al’s… with the exception of going down to Alexander’s, that was my favorite place to get a ribeye. Priced right, always cooked right, good service. Damn, I miss that place.

Mitch: I blame my monitor. You know, that 20-inch beast I bought from someone we BOTH know. Ahem.

    I’m confused… do I look for “Cubby’s”? Or… do I look for “Chubby’s”?

Bill, I can understand your getting foot and food mixed up but, you should at least know the difference between a 20-inch monitor and a 21-inch monitor. I have never seen a 20-inch monitor. Next time, we will add an additional 20-pounds of lead to the monitor.

I hate to say it, but I do not think the eatery will do well. As a life time Sunnylander, I’ve watched business after business close down here & bar after bar open where where Chubby’s will be.
We have 4 bars in Sunnyland already, two of which serve food along with liquor. Even as an eatery, there are so many resturants here. What we need is a darned grocery store, that would get business! Or maybe a skating rink for the kids who have absolutely nothing to do but get in trouble on the weekends?
I wish the new business luck, but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t do well. I try out all of the new businesses that come here & we do have a lot of good places. It’s just that I have a family & with money being tight & the kids, we just don’t get out often- which I think goes for a lot of people, especially here in good ole “Sunnyland” where the City of EP claims us for taxes, police, & garbage pick up & the City of Washington claims us for taxes & schooling.
