Speed kills cops’ sense of humor, apparently

Someone in Colchester, Essex, in Great Britain, has been altering warning signs so they read “greed cameras” instead of “speed cameras.”
One police officer said: ‘We are treating it as an act of vandalism. If we catch whoever is responsible, we intend to throw the book at them.’
A spokesman for the Essex force commented: ‘If we [...]

Some folks have issues with my site issues

I don’t care what PollyPeoria says, it’s my thingy and I’ll play with it if I want to.
For her information — and everyone else’s — this new theme uses almost exactly the same format as the three-column-white theme I used earlier. This isn’t surprising, considering it was based on a design by the same guy [...]

My sincere apologies …

… for missing my appointment with Jonathan Ahl and C.J. Summers this afternoon. I honestly thought we were getting together Tuesday, instead of today, for some reason.

Not much support for ‘Ed,’ even less for the city

There are three letters to the editor in today’s Journal Star responding to Phil Luciano’s column about “Ed,” the dude who thinks it’s reasonable to park his truck in his back yard. One is very critical of the illegal truck parker, one is slightly sympathetic and a third calls Ed a victim of overzealous public [...]

It’s time for a Blogger Bash

Unfortunately, I won’t be there.
In keeping with newly established tradition, a bash will be held this Tuesday, the fifth one of the month when the City Council won’t be meeting, at Castle’s Patio Inn on Loucks at ‘happy hour’ at approximately 6:00 p.m.
Because of a new work schedule, I won’t be attending the bash [...]

BU-area parking is going to get worse before it gets better, and probably not even then

I’m not opposed to the project, per se. I wish the older homes on Maplewood were staying, but BU paid for them on the open market and the owners were compensated. So eminent domain isn’t an issue, as I once worried would be the case.
But I’m not certain that Bradley University is doing enough to [...]

Mogdlin to retire, Tomblin to seek fire chief post

Unless he personally changes his plans, I’ve gotta think assistant Fire Chief Kent Tomblin is a cinch to replace Peoria Fire Chief Roy Modglin when he retires this winter.
Tomblin has been an able assistant to Modglin and I know many on the council have expressed their respect for him in private.
Roy is only 59 years [...]

Gambling with society for a few extra bucks

Here’s another Green Dart from the Whitey for Governor campaign, blasting both gubernatorial candidates Judy Baar Topinka and incumbent Rod Blagojevich for their stances favoring expanding gambling to boost revenue.
Feh.
As a libertarian I believe gambling should be legalized, and subjected to taxation no higher than any other legal business. Hell, put a casino on [...]

Some third-party support

I’m not a member of the Green Party. But I am a supporter of alternative political parties. Since the Libertarian Party decided to have a snit and sit this one out, the Greens are the only game in town.
I’m printing this press release. Enjoy. And AGAIN, I’m willing to print any RayLaHood or Aaron press [...]

Back to the drawing board

“K2″ It’s one of the most popular themes available for WordPress blogs.
But out of the box, it breaks in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
So I’m back using the previous theme.
I’m telling you, it’s beautiful in Firefox. Damn it.
UPDATE: It looks like it’s fixed (by abandoning the 3-column layout). If the sidebar breaks or looks wonky, let me [...]

Bob Woodward met with *gasp* a high-ranking government official

It’s official: New York Times is run by dumbasses:
The State Department’s No. 2 official met with the reporter Bob Woodward during a period in June 2003 in which Mr. Woodward has said he learned from a confidential source that the wife of a prominent Bush administration critic worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, according to [...]

As someone whose job was to direct people to Peoria, I’m fairly certain he doesn’t need directions out of Peoria

Yeah, the string of embarrassing miscues by the Peoria Area Convention and Visitors Bureau has NOTHING do do with President and CEO Steve Powell deciding to quit. People in his position often quit for “family reasons” before they have a new job lined up.

Don’t act so smart, commenters

Yeah. I know. Cory isn’t a troll. And neither or most of these days. Most of the time. But I needed an eighth name.
BTW: I see your email addresses, people. I know which of you use pseudonyms.

Blog bylines

Kiyoshi Martinez and Jeremy Pelzer have started a new blog, CampusByline.com that covers student newspapers at colleges and universities. Naturally, the blog is beautifully designed and well-written.
Naturally, it’s powered by WordPress.
Kudos to both.
