All things considered, Ahl Things Considered should be a hit

September 29, 2006 in Overset

For as long as I’ve known him, I’ve been pestering WCBU chief newsie Jonathan Ahl to start a blog. Furthermore, this blog MUST be called “Ahl Things Considered.” You see, WCBU runs National Public Radio’s afternoon news show, called “All Things Considered.” Therefore, having Jonathan Ahl name his blog “Ahl Things Considered” would be a wonderful play on words. So he needed to do it, for that reason alone.

His response has always been “Are you #@&%! nuts? Do you know how bust I am already? %$#* off.” Only he said it much nicer.

Well, I guess I wore him down, cause he finally gave in and created Ahl Things Considered.

He has just one real post up, about the Wiggles, a group of four Australian lads who have a television show and CDs for little kids.

One of the characters on the show is Captain Feathersword. The Captain is apparently a “friendly pirate”. He uses his feathersword to tickle people. He likes to sing and dance, cook, and has fun on his ship. But this got me to thinking: under what economic model does a “friendly” pirate ship operate successfully? I mean, if you take away the pillaging and plundering, how does a pirate operation stay afloat? The only thing I can think of is it must be the equivalent of public broadcasting in the nautical world. Perhaps the friendly pirate ship pulls up next to other ships a few times a year and asks for donations. I can see it now… “Argh, matey! Surely ye knows the value of havin’ a friendly pirate ship on the high seas! Do your part to help with a pledge, and we’ll send ye a tote bag…”

Heh. That’s a funny post. I love it when people who know how to write start their own blogs.

I expect more blogging goodness from you, Mr. Ahl.

UPDATE: Good post on the struggle between using technology to work away from the office and the need to have time away from work. This is the kind of transparency blogs can bring to the table.

So you convinced him to commit copyright infringement on his employer?

    Yes. My greatest accomplishment.

    ;-)

  3. Jonathan Ahl Says:

Yes Bill did hound me about a blog and did come up with the name “Ahl Things Considered.” But having worked in public radio for 11 of the past 12 years, its not the first time I heard my name used in that vain.

Yay! I’m a fan, so most happy to see you add your voice to the mix, Mr. Ahl.

Vonster, how is that copyright infringement? If anything, it would be related to trademark law.
