The draft is just a Democratic Party jobs program
That’s what Glenn Reynolds says:
Reader Brian Gates, who sends the link, comments: “Less than 2 weeks after the Democrats gained control of Congress, wages are increasing. Imagine how much upward wage pressure there will be after the labor pool is cut by a million men due to Rangel’s draft.”
Prosperity is just around the corner!
Note: Is it really accurate to call Charlie Rangel’s desire to reinstate forced military conscription a scheme of the Democratic Party? Of course not. But is it fair? You bet. After all, the Democratic Underground went around around telling young people that the Republicans had a plan to draft the and ship them off to Iraq. But I didn’t hear many Democrats rise up in outrage when the Republicans were the subject of the lies. So Democrats are just going to have to shut up and take the criticism. It’s the price a party pays for benefiting from a campaign of lies.
Besides, Rangel is a respected Democratic Party statesman. I doubt there is a single elected Democrat in the House of Representatives with the testicular fortitude to tell Rangel to shut up about the draft, now that he being anointed chairman of Ways and Means. Does anyone reading this blog think for one moment that there aren’t Democrats and Republicans who wouldn’t hesitate for one second to trade a vote for the draft for some sweet, sweet tax relief for a campaign contributor?
Nope. The last effort to reinstate the draft might have gotten only two votes. But that was then. The Democrats are in charge of Congress now and that means the draft is more likely to pass than before. That’s just the way politics works.
Note 2: Yes, I am violating my own boycott of Instapundit linkage. I just couldn’t resist the crack about Rangel. Reynolds still owes me about a dozen reciprocal links.

I don’t have to shut up and take anything, ’cause this is a load of bull, Bill. You honestly think that the Chairman of Ways & Means has THAT much power? Enough to swing a measure from two votes to a majority in the current political climate??? That’s absolutely, fundamentally and certifiably ridiculous. It would be political suicide for WAY too many Democrats … and Republicans, too.
Rangel has held his seat since 1971 and won again this election cycle with 94% of the vote!!! He has the luxury to say whatever the flok he wants.
This is all much ado about nothing. Rangel can call in all the favors he wants, but this measure will be voted down handily if it even makes it to the floor.
Call Rangel a blowhard if you want. I happen to agree with that assessment. But to entertain the idea that this has serious possibilities of passage … come on! That’s sensationalist crap.
