I got a cash payment for helping someone move once. I would’ve preferred beer. When people give me cash, I worry I’m going to waste it on food or medicine.

So I pick up this morning’s Financial Times and the headline at the top is “Wal-Mart Presses Supplier for Diversity”. I immediately think hmm… they must have too many Han chinese people working for them. They must need more Tibetans, more Mongols, more Manchus, etc… Then I read the article and find that its about Wal-Mart buying American made stuff and their employees. Diversity? Heck with that, the headline should be “Wal-Mart Still Buys Some Stuff from America”. That is news.

Gone are the days when Sam Walton insisted on buying American made goods and trumpeting that fact.

Anyone know what happened today with a state-wide telephone outage? Hoping to find some details on the TV news. Apparently land-and cellular lines were down in Peoria (downtown, at least) late this afternoon, and rumors were circulating that it was widespread in the state. Just curious.

I managed to call my phone company McLeod in Iowa tonight to find out what was wrong. As it turns out according to them an AT&T cable got sliced and put a huge section of Illinois out of service. But if you were calling long distance out of state you could get through. I didn’t get service back until 8 p.m. The rep at McLeod said all service was supposed to be back on at 6 p.m. but it didn’t happen. AT&T has been digging in the ground in front of my house for two weeks. I just knew something was going to happen. Every time a phone truck from any phone company comes to my yard the phone gets screwed up. It got so bad once they splice my dedicated computer line into my neighbor’s house around the corner and he was using it for his computer and long distance calls and I was being billed for it.
