Police accused of shooting unarmed man
April 30, 2007 in The Wire
Either this woman is lying through her teeth or one or more members of the Peoria Police Department shot an unarmed man and planted a drop-down weapon.
I’m inclined to believe police version of events, namely that police responded to a domestic disturbance call and were confronted by a male occupant who simply refused to drop his handgun. Hell, I’m horrified at the minute possibility that she’s telling the truth. We have two members of the Peoria Police Department. And we have a witness who was shacking up with a convicted felon, who, according to her own statement to the press, had a gun under the couch. It’s foolish to assume that police officers never do wrong and never lie to protect each other. Recent events in Chicago prove otherwise.
There’s probably no exculpatory video this time. Unlike some television crime drama, no piece of evidence will be discovered in the last 15 minutes proving that really happened and leading to a happy ending for all.
Were I a member of the Peoria Police Department, I’d be as mad as Hell that anyone could even think a member of the force could do something like like and try to cover it up. I’d also be mad at my co-workers who let their tempers get the better of them, making law-abiding citizens even a little bit more inclined to think there might be something to this woman’s story.

Apparently, according to a story on the Pantagraph website, another incident has happened in Lacon, and the family is disputing it.
I’ve got some questions on my blog I’d like folks to answer.

It’s not the first time she’s lied or recanted her story when police have delt with or arrested Mr. Lee. We arrest him based on her statements one night and the next night they were back together (after he was released by the State’s Attorney). Her failure to cooperate also would get those court cases dismissed. Happens all the time.

she lost me when she said “I called the cops because I was tired of arguing with him”. Let me tell you I’ve argued with my hubby plenty of times, and yes, I get tired of arguing with him sometimes, but would I call the cops?… Lame, very lame.

uh yah…a few days to ponder the facts and perhaps an unscrupulous attorney call or two as well as friends and family whispering in her ear about the potential paycheck coming to threaten a lawsuit.

As a former Journal Star city editor was fond of saying, “Your local police are armed and dangerous.”
