Dirty Commie scumbag will deliver Caterpillar Distinguished lecture at Knox College
Via an article in the Peoria Journal Star:
China’s ambassador to the United States will speak Monday night at Knox College.
Zhou Wenzhong will deliver the college’s 2007Caterpillar Distinguished Lecture in Global Affairs at 8 p.m. in Kresge Recital Hall in the Ford Center for Fine Arts. The speech is free and open to the public.
So, anyone up for a “
Sorry, I tend to get emotional when I see these evil bastards being treated like respected members of the international community. The truth is that there’s no essential difference between being a Communist Party official from China in 2007 and being National Socialist Party official from Germany in 1941. Ask the people of
Few in the U.S. media ever discuss Tibet. The left has convinced itself that Communism can’t be all that bad (much like they’ve convinced themselves that Islamic terrorists are just mothers and fathers, just like us) and the right finds it inconvenient to think about, what with all the business American corporations are doing over there. Here in Peoria, we give official proclamations of friendship to commissars of our Chinese sister city, Benxi, China.

Yes, a Free Tibet rally is a wonderful idea.
Also what is that cult the filthy Red Commie Chinese hate so much? And persecute? Let’s have big banners that ridicule and mock the asshat Commies!
PS Made in China means totally cheap, crappy BS products that WalFart loves to pass off on dumb trailer trash.
Falun Gong.
The Left has not convinced itself that Communism is “not so bad.” Puhlease! Rich American Capitalists (read corporate republican asshats) want Chinese money! That’s why he’s speaking at Knox!
How often have you see the left align itself, or even refer to, Communism. I go to all sorts of Left sites, and the closest thing I can think of that allies with Communism is socialized medicine – and that is FAR from a Communist tenet, as most of Europe and Canada have socialized medicine.
Oh, or maybe it’s because China owns our ass. They hold billions in bonds from the US. If they ever called them in, our economy would tank instantly. Our debt is in their hands.
So again, blame this on Capitalist Republicans for spending so much on the godforsaken occupation of Iraq!
socialzed medical programs ARE a part of Communism, and Europe and Canada are pretty socialist in their own right.
The only difference between communism and socialism is that one group has the “testicular fortitude” (to quote our elvis impersonator of a governor) to follow through with their beliefs with force of action. The underlying belief that government is God all good things come from it is still the same in either philosophy.
The reason why political groups in America rarely mention the word “communism” anymore isn’t because some don’t believe in it, rather they realize the negative connotation it carries from the 50 year long Cold War.
And if there is any hope of China throwing off the oppression of Communism it will come in the form of “corporate asshats” showing the Chinese people what life is like without it. We can only hope enough people will realize the benefit of democracy and capitalism over communism and create a truly democractic form of government, unlike Russia has.
The PRC is communist in name only. Yes, political expression is restricted, and the Chinese government does have plenty of blood on its hands, especially re: Tibet and Tiananmen. Call them tyrants or oligarchs if you will, but they’re not communists anymore except on the label.
Cara’s right – our relationship with China is driven by cold, hard cash. It’s all about capitalism. You’re more likely to find sympathy for your opinion among far-left libs than conservatives or libertarians, Bill.
Also … do you know anything about this particular Chinese official? You have to be a member of the Communist Party to get anywhere in the Chinese government, just like you had to be a member of the Ba’ath Party to get anywhere in Iraq under Saddam. That doesn’t necessarily make the man a genocidal maniac. Perhaps he’s a reformer. I have no idea, but I wouldn’t call the man a Nazi before I did a little more digging.
Also, I haven’t heard anyone on the left defending terrorist suicide bombers. I have heard them defending the ordinary citizens of Islamic countries that pay the brunt of the price for their countrymen’s insanity.
This “they’re all evil” mentality is what got us in big trouble in Iraq. The exclusively confrontational military approach has worked so well there, hasn’t it? The number of deaths worldwide due to terrorist attacks is now at an all-time high.
Well, I’m sure you could find one or two good Nazis, too. Doesn’t mean i wanna invite them to speak to college kids.
To say that China is communist in name only is being pretty naive. Yes, they have made great strides but they are hardly a beacon for democracy. If they can police copyright infrinements better they could certainly become a model for transforming a economically developing company into thriving capitalist economy.
The argument in favor of business relations with China for some conservatives, except for the ones that are Fortune 500 CEO’s, is that once capitalism is accepted all over China it will erode the iron first the Communist Party STILL has on the hearts and minds of its people. Its working but there is still a long way to go.
As for the lack of people supporting suicide bombers… you haven’t been in college for a while. While recently finishing up my undergraduate degree in political science I was forced to listen to numerous speakers who tried to justify the actions of suicide bobmbers…
cgiselle12:
China is not even close to posessing the financial resources, whether it be bonds or any other means, to “tank” the US economy when it wants to. While I don’t doubt that it would have a negative impact it would hardly put us on the brinl of economic devastation.
While it is growing incredibly fast China is still less than 20% of the size of the US, and divided among more than 4 times our population.

I was trying to dispute Billy’s comment “The left has convinced itself that Communism can’t be all that bad (much like they’ve convinced themselves that Islamic terrorists are just mothers and fathers, just like us) and the right finds it inconvenient to think about, what with all the business American corporations are doing over there.”
This is an oversimplification, massively so. I’m a “lefty” and I don’t support this guy coming to speak at Knox. I’d be right in front of a Free Tibet demonstration. I was trying to defend the left, in that most of us liberals don’t like the Chinese government and their practices. That most of us aren’t big fans of communism, nor do we excuse suicide bombers.
Granted, I only speak for my circle of liberals, but I ain’t reading such rhetoric on DailyKos either.
“Well, I’m sure you could find one or two good Nazis, too. Doesn’t mean i wanna invite them to speak to college kids.”
I assume you would protest Pope Benedict also then.
“I assume you would protest Pope Benedict also then.”
Oh SNAP!!!
God I can’t believe somethings I read on the blogs. “Call them tyrants or oligarchs if you will, but they’re not communists anymore except on the label.”
And what would YOU know about China that someone attending a school for upper-class kids in the Midwest cant learn from their liberal professors?
The massive expansion of the Chinese economy over the last ten years has been to a general abandonment of communist economic principles and full throttle acceptance of capitalism in China. The P.R.C. maintains tight control on political expression … but that’s “tyranny”, not “communism.” The Communist Party rules as an aristocratic oligarchy. It’s communist in name only.
Communism in the U.S.S.R., P.R.C., North Korea and other places only applied to everyone other than the ruling elite. It was – and remains to a certain extent in China and to a great extent in North Korea – a method of controlling the populace by keeping them all poor and dependent on the state.
The “Communist” Party officials in the old Soviet Union and in the P.R.C. form an aristocratic oligarchy. They live in mansions, drive in limousines, have summer homes and mistresses. Does that sound “communist” to you?
An “ideal” communist state could be democratic, but that has never played out in reality. There are socialist democracies in Europe. I think a lot of people just automatically equate communism and socialism with tyranny and dictatorship, and that’s fallacious.
Don’t get me wrong – communism and over-reaching socialism are obviously failed philosophies, both politically and economically. They lend themselves to be a method of control for a tyrannical few, and central government control of pricing, industry and agriculture is certainly a failed economic model.
Maybe I’m making a mountain out of semantic mole hill, here … but I think the tendency of Americans to over-simplify complex situations and poor understanding of what goes on in the rest of the world has lead to a lot of fatal errors in our collective judgement. Prime example – the invasion of Iraq.
