Cheney: Bad for America

Friday, June 29th, 2007

It’s a shame that the Peoria Journal Star didn’t post today’s editorial on the Web site. It was a particularly snarky take-down of Vice President Dick Cheney, focusing on his unprecedented power and his role in y every screw-up and scandal in the administration. In fact, almost the entire page was about Cheney. Even Jonah […]

Rupert Murdoch: Online visionary?

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Yeah, he’s considered a money-grubbing vulgarian whose malign influence has turned cable news into a tabloid cesspool. But as this Time article suggests, he understands the potential of all-online news. Consider:
Two years ago, Murdoch’s archrival, Sumner Redstone of Viacom, thought he had a deal for MySpace, but News Corp. swooped in and snatched it, bidding […]

Today’s Peoria Journal Star article on the death of efforts to attach a hotel to the Peoria Civic Center saved the best, most telling paragraph for last.

GateHouse Media has bought out TimesNewspapers, the chain of local weeklies for which I once worked as editor of the Peoria Times-Observer. The other newspapers that have been snatched up include the Chillicothe Times-Bulletin, the Morton Times-News, the East Peoria Times-Courier and the Washington Times-Reporter. These papers had a combined circulation of 31,000 (one can […]

What’s the difference between Chillicothe and Peoria?

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

In Chillicothe, they actually hire new police officers when the city expands.

“If you want to measure the growth here, when I started there was one stoplight in town. Now there are three, […]
