Joe McCarthy had the right idea

I was wondering which of my liberal blogger friends would be the first to accuse me of a Commie Witch Hunter. Turns out it was Knight in Dragonland:

Wow … based on multiple local blog posts of late (here at the Peoria Chronicle, here and here at Peoria Pundits), the spirit of Joe McCarthy lives on in Central Illinois. I think some local bloggers and their commenters have been watching too many re-runs of Red Dawn and Amerika. It’s like the Red Scare all over again.

You can’t talk about how Communist is evil without liberals rolling their eyes in amusement and invoking the Hated Name of Joe McCarthy. I get how liberals might consider Communist philosophy just a stronger and headier version of their own belief. But history has shows that when these guys get power, they operate the most racist, elitist, anti-environment, anti-free-speech, anti-homosexual, anti-women’s societies in the history of mankind. Yet to most liberals, Joe McCarthy, not Joseph Stalin, is the monster under the bed that frightens them most.

First, McCarthy was a jerk. He was paranoid and overly concerned with his own career. Were it not for the Red Scare, he would have been a very minor politician. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t real and very active Communist agents in the government. History has shown that Alger Hiss — to name one — was every bit the traitor that the “witch hunters” claimed he was.

Frankly, I could care less if some screen writer or actor ever attended a meeting of the Communist Party (which was funded by the Soviet Union). These days, I just assume they’re ALL committed left wing wackos and try to enjoy the entertainment regardless. Still, consider that Stalin killed some seven million of his own people in purges, mostly by starving them to death. McCarthy and his ilk cost some people their jobs for a decade or so. That’s not good, but hardly more of a monster than Uncle Joe. Or Pol Pot. Or Fidel Castro (whose health care system is spoken of fondly by the Journal Star’s Pam Adams). And our own Knight in Dragonland naively thinks the people who run China’s oppressive government are just capitalists at heart who just want to be our friends.

Great selective quoting, Billy.  Could you mention that I use fully HALF of the post you quoted to raise my own concerns about China exerting undo influence over the decisions of our federal government because they own a large chunk of our country's debt?  Or that in another post I list a whole laundry list of crimes against the people of China by their government? When did I EVER say that Joe McCarthy was just as bad as Joseph Stalin?  You're inserting words in my mouth, and I don't appreciate it.I like your enlightened attachment of the "liberal" label to me as well.  Way to reduce the level of the argument by trying to pigeon hole my opinion. You'll also have to forgive me for having higher expectations of the United States than I do for a one-party dictatorship.  So sorry.Wonderful citizen journalism (snicker).

KiD: Forgive me for commenting on that part of your post that compared me to Joe McCarthy:

My point about how most liberals are more worried about McCarthyism than they are Communism stands.

Bill:  You owe no apology to the commie liberal (knight in dragon land). His type are always trying to make America the blame for everyting bad in the world. I suggest he trade Pekin for Peking and see how quick he changes his three dollar bill attitude.

    TT: Well, THAT was harsh.
