Equal time for a much maligned breed

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve given pit bulls a rough time on this blog. So in the interest of fairness, I feel compelled to post this video, which provides at least a little evidence not all pits are vicious killers.

Of course, for all we know, this animal just likes playing with his food and make Chicken McNuggets out of these guys as soon as the camera was off.

Hi Billy,I have a keen interest in this topic, as I have been the proud owner of a beautiful, playful, wonderful pit bull for the last five years.  She actually looks very much like the one in this video. As the owner of a pit bull, I take my responsibilities very seriously.  It is up to the dogs' owners to keep their animals out of trouble.  I am all for harsh punishment for delinquent owners, as that is where the problems truly lie.I would hold up my dog as Exhibit A as to why a breed-specific ban is an overreaching solution to a real problem.   The fact is that there are plenty of "good" pits out there, you just don't hear about them in the papers.I would be more than happy to register my dog with the state, pay a reasonable fee, or whatever….just please don't take her away from me!! Crack down on the ignorant people who give pits a bad name instead!

jwright: Of course, you are right. A huge problem, which I reported in the River City Times, is that they are a status symbol among the thugs. And pit fighting is a huge problem. And I do think that some special breed specific licensing/fee might be a way prevent some of the tragedies that have happened. I hate to see it come to that. Lauren Malmberg of PAWS  told me that the pits can be very loving dogs, but have to be handled by people with patience and knowledge of the breed.

Poor pit bulls. It's not their fault they're a favorite of dogfighters and criminally abusive paranoiacs everywhere. It's just because they have jaws like a crocodile and never let go once they clamp on and are fairly easy to train — so starving and beating them trains them up to extremely effective viciousness very quickly. My aunt-the-vet had a lobotomized pit named Special Ed that she rescued. (As well as other rescued pits through the years.) Fortunately the amateur shotgun lobotomy on Ed (how he ended up in the vet ER) wiped his memory completely clean so he doesn't recall the prior abuse he was subjected to and is the happiest, stupidest dog on the planet. He has no OTHER short term memory either, so you have to show him the food every meal, and frequently mid-meal when he gets distracted, looks up, and forgets he's eating.I probably wouldn't have one in a house with children since it's basically a given that at some point a child will hurt a pet and the pet will strike back, and a pit's jaws are powerful enough to take off a toddler's arm. (But I would say that about many other breeds of dogs as well, as well as large powerful-beaked birds, and individual members of any species who are scared of children, prone to biting, or ill-tempered.) But there's nothing INHERENTLY vicious about pit bulls.

Eyebrows states:  "and individual members of any species who are scared of children, prone to biting, or ill-tempered.)"….which also (unfortunately) describes many of the parents  I seem to get behind in the grocery lines.
