Today’s news: The health risks of Snickers

Last night’s Peoria School District sandbagging session still has me in a snarky mood, so forgive me if it leaks into this life of links via the Journal Star:

  • Peoria Police Chief Steve Settingsgaard and Sheriff Mike McCoy are going to air commercials designed to discourage bullying.  Judging from the comments, perhaps the principals at local schools are the ones who need some educating. And judging from last night’s sandbagging, the school board itself is still bullying neighborhoods.
  • Am I reading this right? This new ordinance — approved by the Peoria County Board and soon to come before the Peoria City Council — will give the Peoria Animal Welfare Shelter the power to go onto private property and imound unlicensed pets, even though that animal never left the owners property and never bit or threatened anyone? Really? So much for the Constitution …
  • snickers.gifThe editorial about meaningless health scares on today’s award-winning (snicker) editorial page sounds almost libertarian. We regular readers are not fooled by this, as we’ve been fed a steady diet of anti free-market nonsense for years.
  • The City of Chicago is buying a bunch of hybrid gas/electric vehicles. Last year, the Peoria City Council discovered it’s love of ethanol-powered vehicles, which are worse for the environment than regular gasoline. Chicago panders to environmentalists, Peoria panders to farmers. The trouble is that hybrids really are good for the environment. Ethanol-powered vehicles … let’s be charitable and say the jury is still out on whether or not there really is any benefit to the environment from the use of ethanol to power vehicles.

If the pets are unlicensed then they haven’t been vaccinated namely rabies shots. Since some people can’t be bothered with picking up their trash or storing it properly we have an influx of rats, mice, opossums, and racoons–all potential carriers. My dog has killed two rats in the past couple of weeks and we keep up on things on our property. I am glad she has her shots current. So it targets irresponsible pet owners I would be guessing just from taking a jaunt in my own hood that the gang bangers and drug dealors are hummm irresponsible pet owners.
