Review: One strike against Steak ‘n’ Shake
September 23, 2007 in Section 2
Sigh.
I have another bad restaurant report for the Peoria blogsphere.
Dad and I met for a late dinner at Steak ‘n’ Shake, 3229 N. University, last night. We walked into the place at about 10:15 p.m. and we didn’t get our food until about 10:55 p.m. I am at a loss to explain why. The joint was about 1/3 filled. There were at least four waitresses. The kitchen seemed to have plenty of help. Maybe the fact that a manager and at least one other employee were standing at the front door catching a smoke as we walked into the joint should have tipped us off.
When we got our order, the food was less than spectacular. In fact, it looked like very little care was taken to putting the food on the plates, as both of our Chili Macs had noodles hanging off the side. Dad’s cheeseburger was cold.
I wanted to leave after the first 30 minutes of waiting for our food. Dad wanted to wait, ’cause he was hungry. When his cold food arrived, I wanted to get the manager and raise Hell. Dad said “no.”
So, we ended up leaving. We weren’t hungry, but we really didn’t feel good at all about the experience. Which is sad, cause S ‘n’ S is one of our haunts, as there really aren’t that many late-night places to eat and chew the fat (figuratively speaking) here in the ol’ River City, unless you want to hang out with drunks or have some inflated tart rub herself against you while you’re trying to eat. And in the recent past, I’ve been very happy with the service at the place.
So, I make Shake ‘n’ Shake a rare exception to my “chain restaurants suck” rule.
I’m going to write this off as a fluke, and post this article as a friendly warning.
Strike one.

Sadly, not a fluke for that location, Billy. I’ve had a couple of slow experiences in that one as well. The new one at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie has had awesome service the times we’ve went there, though.

I hope nobody hurts me, but I don’t get what people LIKE about Steak ‘n’ Shake. The burgers aren’t that much better than a McBurger, certainly not enough to justify the price. At that price, Chili’s or Cheddars is far superior.
But the one in the 3200 block of University is the only one I’ve been to, so ….

I never eat out at a diner with a drive thru window. Time to kick it up a notch and try Denny’s. They are open all night and their food is no better than SnS. But to be fair, I did stop by the Steak N Shake on N University a few days ago to pick up an order. 2 dbl steakburgers and 2 lg fries. I went inside and ordered. I waited 30 minutes for the food in a place that had 4 customers at the time. In fact the wait staff was standing around all bunched up doing nothing. I thought, 2 burgers, 2 fries, they can’t screw that up and went home. Sure enough, both steakburgers were screwed up and not what was ordered, the fries were ice cold. Slap me once, OK, slap me twice, well….Ok but screw me again, I will never ever set foot in a SnS again. Eyebrows IS correct, they are just not worth it.

Is it a union restaurant? That would explain a lot.

If you are out late, Patrick Eamon’s downtown has good food and is not expensive. They have a soup and sandwich combo that’s $6.95 and a bunch of sandwiches and pizzas that are around that much. (Plus, it’s locally owned and the staff are really nice)
I have never understood the appeal of Steak and Shake either. But I’m not much of a meat eater and don’t like their super skinny fries.
