Site news: How to get banned from Peoria Pundit

I neglected to read today’s comments this morning. That was a mistake.
Folks, I have had a consistent policy. This blog is NOT the place to go to discuss whether or nor ANYONE is or is not gay. Period. I don’t write posts about it, and I delete comments that do so.
I had to take down […]

Today’s news: Arresting news

Links via the Journal Star:

Sometimes I really think the Journal Star headline writers have no idea how their work is being perceived. For example: “Hyde a ‘distinguished’ servant.” Do we really need the quotes marks for one word? Apparently the “editors” do.
Well, thank God we now know what the “top priorities” are each of […]

In Which I Blatantly Rip-Off One Of Eyebrows McGee’s Posts

Eyebrows McGee has blogged on the subject of grocery shopping. It triggered what started as a comment, but I cut most of it out and turned it into rambling a post of my own on the subject. (WARNING: Stream of Consciousness Ahead)
When I was little I thought it was cool […]

Blogging: Posting will be light

I’m devoting some time and energy to The Blog Peoria Project recently. I have some posts up, as well as some new features to benefit members. In the next few months, I plan to make the site more of an online community, with chat and instant messaging among members.

Media: Selective boosterism from the PJS

PeoriaIllinoisan says he’s sitting on his hands even though he’s got “fireballs coming out of my fingertips.”
Gee, could it be that PI, a big booster of the  Peoria Playhouse Children’s Museum, is just a tad POed at the headline above today’s Journal Star article: “Children’s museum funding drags.” Caterpillar has just announced that it will […]

Media: J-schools cranking out interchangable cogs for the mainstream media machine

CampusProgress interviewed Rolling Stone political reporter Matt Taibbi, and this exchange had me rolling on the floor:
CampusProgress: You wrote a column in the New York Press a few years back referring to journalism as “shoveling coal for Satan.” I believe you also said that journalism as a career was worse than being a worker in […]

Politics: Henry Hyde passes

Retired Rep. Henry Hyde, who died this morning at a Chicago-area hospital, never recovered from heart surgery. Initial media reports identify him as being best known for his strong opposition to abortion (a position with which I disagreed, by the way). He took a principled position in opposition to the use of forfeiture as it […]

Christmas Songs

A few of the songs I enjoy during the Christmas Season - most don’t get a lot of air-play.

Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses
Christmas Time All Over the World by Sammy Davis, Jr.
Mistletoe & Holly by Frank Sinatra
Baby, It’s Cold Outside by Dean Martin
And the Angels Cried by Alan Jackson w/ Allison Krause
If We Make It […]

Local: Will District 150 kiss city’s $344,000 goodbye out of spite?

Kudos to the Journal Star’s Clare Jellick. Once again, she’s used her j-blog to insert leftover material from her notebook into the public discussion, this time to provide some background to Tuesday’s article about Peoria School District 150’s sudden decision to consider locating its new East Bluff school at the site of the now-closed White […]

Local: Welcome to the neighborhood, Jackson Corners

I heard today that the city has chartered a new neighborhood association, the Jackson Corners Neighborhood Association. The JCNA serves the area bordered by Knoxville, Forrest Hill, McClure and Prospect.
The fledgling association counts 13 members, and is likely to grow because of aggressive door-to-door recruiting.
The new association shares the exact same official boundaries as the […]

Politics: Obama doesn’t know what he’s talking about …

… so he’s listening to people who do:

I dunno though. This whole idea of not fighting a war unless the intelligence is good or there’s enough equipment to go around seems kinda like something a hippie would think up.
Hat tip: Ollie.

Liveblogging: Peoria City Council

The meeting starts in about 30 minutes and the chamber is full of regulars, and Tiger Scouts from Den 9, Pack 158 at St. Vincent’s. There are some kids here from Dunlap who are getting extra credit.
I have been asked to not hit my keyboard quite so loudly. It is apparently preventing people from hearing […]
