Media: Lots of holes in this Journal Star report
The Journal Star’s political coverage may be a joke (I didn’t say it, he did) but I’ve gotta hand it to them. They’ve got the Krispy Kreme beat well covered:
A Washington woman has created a new culinary confection by transforming Krispy Kreme doughnuts into a decadent dessert, winning second place in a national contest of 1,700 entrants.
I was going to print more than one paragraph from this scintillating report, but then I remembered that there’s not one single molecule that gives a flying rat’s ass about Krispy Kreme.
What was true even back when I was an editor and I tossed Krispy Kreme press releases in the trash unread.







What’s with the Krispy Kreme hate mongering? The free donut buffet you suggested was shot down?
I hate to slap down my former employer, but you are 100 percent correct on this story. It’s a complete waste of ink. At most, it might have been a brief in Neighbors.
Mt beef with Krispy Kreme is that it symbolized what’s wrong with feature coverage in general. So much of it is driven by those who are promoting certain businesses. First, there were stories about how there was a a clamor for Krispy Kreme’s outside of New York City (there wasn’t). They it was the Krispy Kreme fund raiser, which was supposed to be some sort of grass roots thing (it wasn’t) and then there were the breathless press releases about a Krispy Kreme coming to YOUR home town. Woo Hoo! The damn things are JUST ANOTHER donut. Period.
Feh. I’m sick of the whole thing. And I mention this because it’s just another way for this company to get free publicity out of newspapers. I would think a newspaper with a shrinking newshole AND a shrinking pool of reporters would chose to devote time and space to matters of greater importance.
This kind of story is easy to write. Easy-to-write stories often are written.
I’ll take Spudnuts any day over Krispy.
