Media: Bad news for District 150 watchers

Oh, rats. Jonathan Ahl reports on his blog that Clare Jellick is leaving the Journal Star to pursue a career in medicine.
It’s wonderful news for Clare, as I am certain she will succeed and no doubt earn MUCH more than she will as a journalist. But it’s bad news for those of us who want to keep an eye on Peoria School District 150. She has been a top notch reporter, both in print and on her blog.
And it’s bad news whenever anyone leaves the Journal Star, or is promoted to fill a vacancy, because GateHouse Media adamantly refuses to hire new people. Oh, the education beat will be reassigned, of course. But there will no doubt be lower quality work done on this or some other beat. There are only so many hours in a day, and eventually the work suffers.
Jonathan also reported that Amy Paul is planning to leave WMBD 31 to take a job as a spokesperson with OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. I didn’t encounter Paul often, but I always likedĀ her work as an anchor. I’m sure she’ll do a fine job and will be missed at WMBD.
Best wishes to both in their new endeavors.

I don’t know Amy very well, but Clare is a personal friend and a class act. Her departure from the paper will be a sad day for sure, although I’m glad she’s sticking around Peoria.
I predict she will succeed no matter what she does. She’s that kind of person.

Yes, Clare is definitely a good one. She’ll be missed.
I don’t think this will result in a net loss of positions, though, as a night copy editor with reporting experience is being moved to city desk (voluntarily), and a new copy editor will be hired. Unless someone else is leaving whom I haven’t thought of.

Best to both Clare and Amy. I don’t know Clare, but her education reporting has been first-rate. Amy also does a great job and I will miss tuning in to watch her.

Was interviewed by Amy Paul once. She was a very nice person and I wish her the best in her new career.
