Lesson Learned – Christmas 2007
I learned a few things this Christmas.
1. As much as an 11-year old boy wants to be treated like a grown-up, sometimes his still just wants to be a little kid.
2. Six years ago, my oldest daughter was in her first school Christmas program. Six years from now she will be in her last. Holy Moley! How do you stop this thing (or at least slow it down little?)
3. How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? Same answer as “How many baby dolls does a five-year old need?” The world may never know.
4. If you want to keep an OCD 9-year old busy, give him a puzzle.
5. The Nintendo Wii is, in fact, one hell of a lot of fun.
6. Take a grumpy old man with a frozen farm pond; add 4 great grandkids on skates on Christmas Day. Sit back and watch him grin and laugh.
7. Taking four kids to grandpa’s on Christmas morning while my wife stays at home, by herself, for a couple of hours is a gift in and of itself (for her).
8. Letting a five-year old say grace at Christmas Eve dinner is priceless.
9. Ice skating outdoors on Christmas Eve sure makes it easier to convince children that it is bed-time.
10. I am much more relaxed around my in-laws in my own house then when I am at theirs. My house, my rules.
Hope you had a lovely holiday.
PS:
I got a new charcoal grill (some assembly required.)

“Some assembly required”–the doomful words every unhandyman dreads.
I once assembled an entire swing-set for my daughters using only a Sears crescent wrench WITHOUT SWEARING ONCE.
That year I got a 12-string guitar for Chrismas. I’m sure it was for being such an exemplary good boy.
There’s nothing like having BBQ chicken in winter.
