Politics: Sierra Club Endorses Allen Mayer for Illinois House of Representatives
The following press release just hit my inbox. Mr. Mayer is getting some payback for his support for voting to deny the license for expanding the landfill in Pottstown.
Allen Mayer, candidate for the Illinois House of Representatives in the 92nd district, has been endorsed by the Sierra Club. Mayer has a proven record as a strong environmental advocate for the Peoria area, particularly in his work on the Peoria County Board leading opposition to the expansion of the PDC hazardous waste landfill at the edge of the Peoria. Protection of our environment is one of Mayer’s primary campaign issues.
“We are proud to endorse Allen Mayer for State Representative. We know that his experience in state and local government and his record of dedication to the environment means voters have a rare opportunity to elect an environmental All-Star,†said Rudy Habben, Vice Chairman for Heart of Illinois Group Sierra and member of the Illinois Sierra state board.
Mayer’s environmental efforts, experience and substantive public service make him a highly-qualified candidate. On the Peoria County Board he has been a proponent of the county’s innovative, environmentally-friendly subdivision and building code ordinances. He has spearheaded efforts to dramatically curtail the County’s wasteful energy usage through innovative financing.
Mayer works as Special Counsel for the office of the Illinois State Comptroller and helps the office draft and shape legislation. Sierra Club notes his campaign platform includes his plan to discuss concerns with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency regarding monitoring standards and resources for area legacy hazardous waste dumps.
“Allen hasn’t just said the right things at election time. He has been an environmental crusader for years. Allen has always been there for us when we needed him,†said former Heart of Illinois Group Sierra Club Chair Joyce Blumenshine. The Sierra Club, founded in 1892, actively works to endorse and promote pro-environment candidates.
