Media: Sun-Times for sale? Perhaps to GateHouse …?

Via Crain’s Chicago Business (paid registration required):

Dan Miller, the Sun-Times business editor, resigned today, telling his staff he expects the paper to be sold within a matter of months and wants to leave before he becomes a casualty of pending staff cuts.

Mr. Miller’s announcement comes days after the Sun Times Media Group began announcing newsroom layoffs as part of a $50 million cost-cutting effort.

One name circulating as a potential buyer is Denver-based MediaNews Group, led by William Dean Singleton.

“Media News Group has no interest in the Sun-Times,” Mr. Singleton told Crain’s.

The Sun-Times didn’t immediately return a call.

Well, if the paper is for sale, and Media News Group isn’t interested, perhaps GateHouse will try to gobble it up. After all, they’ve bought nearly every newspaper that’s come up for sale in Illinois during the last year. But GateHouse loves to be the only player in the market, and the Chicago Tribune rules the roost up in Chicago, so maybe not.

I don’t think GateHouse would be interested in the Sun-Times. It’s too big and has massive competition. And when was the last time Singleton bought a paper?

Maybe Murdoch would like to have it back. Conrad Black may have put it on its death bed, but Murdoch was the guy who originally punched it in the stomach.

Maybe Sam Zell will buy it, close it down and eliminate the competition. He’d probably rather do that to The Herald, though.
