Site news: That’s it, I’m turning the car around and going home
I’m leaving to attend interim City Manager Henry Holling’s press conference. I thought it might be nice to be able to tell this guy that I’ve taken steps to keep what happened to him from happening to anyone else. I’ll tell him that right before I appologize for what small part this blog played in the smear campaign that preceded his appointment.
Moments ago, I changed this blog’s settings to stop anyone from posting a comment who is not a registered user. That means that if I do NOT have a valid email on file, no commenting. Oh, I’m sure some slick people will try using fake emails. I assure you, this will result in deleted comments and domain banning. Sorry, kids, effective right now, this is a blog for grown ups.
Oh, and here’s a new rule: If I delete a comment or a part of a comment, and someone using the same domain tries to post it AGAIN … you guessed it: Domain banning. And I’ll be sharing that domain address with other bloggers.
And here’s some info for those who like to slander and libel: I’m immune. And my host WILL supply detailed routing information if they are presented with a legal warrant filed by, say, someone wishing to file a libel suit. And while public figures have a higher burden or proof, it’s not an insurmountable burden.
Remember that, anonymous cowards.

It’s more effective to stop the car and tell the kids to get out. That always worked with my brother and me. It would probably be considered child abuse now. (My dad is dead, so he can’t sue.)
Does this mean Elaine Hopkins has no excuse to disallow comments?
That’s probably a good idea. Can you stick with it for the long term this time?
15 minutes later….after trying to remember password and then resetting it and creating a new one…i’m in (I think).
Got no problem with your approach, though I think you’ve over-reacted on this. The biggest and most unfortunate thing is that lost in all the extreme comments is that there may have been very legitimate reasons (that are public and well-publicized) that he should not have been appointed. I think that a statement in advance of the appointment (and I don’t mean 5 minutes before – i mean in the weeks leading up to it) why they felt he was qualified and why the DUI was a non-issue should have been made.
“the smear campaign that preceded his appointment.”
Bill, have you heard the old saying “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire?”
I’m going to say that applies here.
Bah! It’s his site, let him do what he wants with it. If people are that concerned with making themselves heard, they won’t troll/spam the site and actually register a username.
Makes perfect sense to me.
