Local: City to limit salting

February 6, 2008
By Billy Dennis

From a press release:

Update as of 8:00 a.m.: City crews are salting primary streets, and secondary intersections. Once plowing operations begin, salting will be limited to major intersections, bridges, and hills. Salt supplies in our area are running low, therefore, we need to limit our use of salt at this time. Crews will maintain driving lanes on primary streets by plowing until the snow ends. Snow fall will become heavy during the morning, and afternoon. We can expect traffic delays during evening rush. Please use caution while driving, and reduce speeds. If you have questions, please call Public Works at (309) 494-8850.

Took me half-an-hour to make my usual 15-minute drive home from ICC at 11 a.m. Horrific. We were going 30 over the bridge (on 150 — is that McCluggage?), and that felt far too adventurous. There was a salt/plow that was basically doing loops of the bridge to keep it clear.

25 on most of War Memorial, though got as fast as 30 on the flat.

I was rolling at 5 mph in the neighborhood, where the plows hadn’t been yet, and still sliding around.

Yes, McClugage is the 150/24 bridge. Murray Baker is the I-74 bridge.

The snow is horrible to drive in, but it looks pretty.
