Local: A little smoke, but no heat, on city council agenda

February 7, 2008
By Billy Dennis

Tuesday’s Peoria City Council meeting will either be very long, or very short. The agenda (printed below the jump) is very long. But there are 30 items on the consent agenda, which can be approved with one vote (although typically five or six items are taken out for discussion). There are no special presentations. There are, however, five proclamations. Depending on how long-winded everyone is, the real meeting could start 20-30 minutes after the talking starts.

I note that reconsideration of a local smoking ban ordinance is on the table for reconsideration. A local ordinance would give the city the right to collect 100 percent of the revenue from tickets, giving the city a financial incentive to send Peoria Police officers to vigorously enforce this poorly-written law.

We already know that the police plan to take time away from fighting serious crime to behave like nannies (we have to be “fair” and make sure no one is thumbing their noses at THE LAW). If the local ban passes, their little bar raids become even more offensive to individual liberty.

I am not too worried, though. According to C.J.’s excellent report, we know that there were at most four votes in favor of a local ordinance the first time it came up for a vote. But Council members Robert Manning and Bill Spears were absent at that meeting, and I really don’t see either one going over to the Dark Side on this issue.

The agenda with the supporting documentation can be found here.

For those who can’t bear to leave Peoria Pundit, here is full agenda:
