Media: Six words for Phil Luciano

March 5, 2008
By Billy Dennis

Funny column from Phil Luciano today. He tries to sum up a list of Peoria people and institutions using just six words.

I thought I’d turn the tables a bit on Mr. Luciano:

  • Poor man’s Rick Baker. VERY poor.
  • Snideness isn’t real talent? Who knew?
  • Column subjects based on junk email.
  • Dishes it out, can’t take it.
  • Doesn’t realize White Sox suck ass.
  • Three jobs, mediocre at all three.
  • Scouring press releases for column ideas.

And these are just off the top of my head. I’m sure my loyal readers can come up with a few others.

Billy wishes he had Phil’s job.

How hard can it be to read the top 10 list from RetroCrush.com?

Talent causes Bill to envy him.

Well, Phil is a talented guy. I think he needs to pick one thing, though.

Bill envy Phil? Don’t think so!

I think they use FARK.com to power their PM show too.

I’ve been known to use Fark.com too.

    Let’s see…..
Phil works at a real newspaper (such as it it)
Phil works at a real radio station (such as that is)
    Phil teaches at Bradley

Phil’s biggest critic works from an apartment.

    go figure

Phil is a former co-worker, but I’m most impressed by his radio work. He’s lucky to have Jamie Markley to work with, but he does pretty well even when he’s working solo. Seriously, compare that show with anything of the same genre coming out of Chicago. I don’t think Roe Conn at WLS is better, and he’s making obscene amounts of money.

Best of all, Markley & Luciano is a local show. Who else around here is doing local radio anymore?

First of all, this post was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, which was lost on most people who read it.

Second, I do not know how one can do a three hour radio show show AND teach college AND still claim to be able to bring his “A” game to his newspaper column.

The answer is that I don’t think he is being his “A” game. He’s done some good work. But it’s hot and cold. I’d like to see him spend more time being the best columnist he could be, because that’s what Peoria needs, not a talk show host.

I know what you’re saying. It’s really smart for anyone in the newspaper biz these days to have a fallback position, though. Newspapers large and small are paring some of their best people to save money.

A newspaper employee looking at Chainlinks, Romenesko or E&P this year who doesn’t have a backup plan is in denial. I hope my former colleagues don’t take this wrong, because I do wish them the best.

Of course you wrote “tongue-in-cheek” It’s just that you ride the PJS (and everyone that works for it except those that wear skirts) like Roy Rogers rode Trigger.

    So…what to believe??

Roe Conn is no better than Luciano? You’ve got to be kidding. Look, I like the Markley and Luciano show and love the local programming, but you can’t compare the two.

Here’s a challenge: Turn on WLS at 2pm today and listen to the Roe Conn show for the first hour, then switch over to WMBD and listen to the first hour of the Markley & Luciano show and get back to me.

I believe the local radio show is more important than the newspaper article, because it allows a more direct dialogue between the press and the people. It also gives people in the area a stronger sense of identity with the towns in which they live.
