Politics: Schock, Callahan have a new opponent in the 18th District race

Via the State Journal-Register:
Admittedly running against “great odds,” Green Party candidate Sheldon Schafer is entering the race to replace U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood, R-Peoria.
Schafer, 59, of Peoria and a political novice, hopes to offer a different choice at the ballot box in November and advance the beliefs of the Green Party, which was established in [...]

Today’s News: Peoria’s biggest slumlord

The links are via the Journal Star. The snarky commentary is my own:

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I see no reason to make a huge deal out of minor crimes and traffic offenses committed by the children of public officials unless there’s some evidence that official tried to interfere with prosecution or [...]

Local: City willing to risk another lawsuit to protect Big Al’s from competition?

How completely bizarre.
For a little less than five years, the official position of the City of Peoria is that Elliott’s cannot and must not have a liquor license. Because a tiny non-stripper corner of the joint was too close to an apartment complex.
This decision allowed the place to operate as a liquor-free strip joint where [...]

News: Kentucky lawmaker wants to jail authors of Federalist Papers, Poor Richard’s Almanac and Common Sense

A Kentucky lawmaker has proposed to ban the practice of posting information anonymously on the Internet. Posters would have to leave their real name, email address  and actual physical address with the site owner. The poster’s real name would have to appear on the site. The publisher would be fined $500 the first time an [...]

Local: One restaurant bites the dust, another re-opens

Sad news, via Chef Kevin: The Penguin Tapis closing its doors, if if hasn’t by the time you read this. The Tap was always close to my heart. I used to eat there quite often, less and less since the original owner passed away, leaving the restaurant to his family. Unlike Kevin, I loved their [...]

Today’s News: Infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure

The links are via the Journal Star. The snarky commentary is my own:

Reporter John Sharp turned in a nice package of articles on the Warehouse District. The main story details how the area — just southwest of what we consider “downtown Peoria” — has evolved from a industrial and distribution center based on railroads to [...]

News: Obama, McCain are less ‘tepid’ on Tibet than Bush

Out of curiosity, I went looking for any statements Barack Obama and John McCain might have made regarding the crackdown the communist Chinese government is doing in occupied Tibet.
I found this in an Associated Press article:
McCain did not discuss the issue during a 45-minute meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, but told reporters later the [...]

PeoriaPunditRadio: Sunday’s show cancelled

One of the disadvantages to scheduling shows in advance is that I sometimes find out later that my work schedule has changed. So, I will be working Sunday and won’t be able to broadcast tomorrow’s show about China and Tibet.
I’ll reschedule for a later date.
It’s too bad because there is so much to talk about.

Local: Best. Day. At. Work. EVAR.

Things have been a might stressful at work recently.
I remarked to one of the bosses that one of the things that might improve morale might be movie posters.
Preferably, movie posters featuring talented actors like Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson and … Drew Barrymore.
He laughed and the suggestion. I laughed at my suggestion.
So what does he bring [...]

Media: Snark invades the Journal Star newsroom

Hat’s off to PeoriaIllinoisan, for catching this gem that I missed in today’s article about med school grads:
Medical students around the country on Thursday performed the annual rites of Match Day, the day they learned where they will spend the next five years as medical residents. The 44 candidates for graduation at [...]

Today’s news: Laws for thee and me

The links are from the Peoria Journal Star. The snarky comments are my own:

Apparently, I’ve been violating the city’s trademark. Sue me.
As someone who often complains about spending on non-essentials, it seems odd to be defending this because it is non-essential. But as someone who is familiar with communications and marketing, I also recognize [...]

News: Chickens coming home to roost

I could not resist running this photo. I believe the man on the right needs no introduction. The guy on the left: The Rev. Jeremiah Wright. That’s the former pastor of Barack Obama’s church who the right wingers are using the scare Democrats into voting for Hillary Clinton, who the GOP thinks will be easier [...]

Local: If you happen to go to Wal-Mart today …

… find the worker there named Marty. She’s my mother. Tell her you read on the Internet that she makes the best damn lasagna in Peoria.
This is the Wal-Mart on North University.
I’m telling you, it’s addictive.

Local: Peoria in a hole?

Two different notices from City Hall might give one pause about the city’s infrastructure:
There has been a cave-in in the Southbound lane of Wisconsin. Wisconsin from McClure to Arcadia will be closed from now until repairs are completed.
We are not aware what has caused the cave-in.
And this one:
Due to a water main leak downtown in [...]

News: Turns out mercury in bulbs is just as poisonous as mercury from other sources! Who knew? Well, I did …

You remember all the hate-mail I got when I dared to suggest that those carbon-friendly light-bulbs that the envirowackos are trying to shove down our throats might not really be environmentally friendly because they are filled with mercury?
Turns out I was ahead of the curve on that one:
Compact fluorescent light bulbs, long touted by environmentalists [...]
