Behold the Peoria Blogosphere, and tremble!

In a reply to my comment, Peoria Anti-Pundit postulates one reason Debbie Woldmeyer won’t meet with constituents:
Billy, noted. But seriously, would you meet with this group on a policy decisson that has already been voted on and made?
According to the qualifcations (posted by Ms Alms) to be a school board member, a chimp can do [...]

Local: IDOT screws Peoria

You know, every once in a while, I’d like to at least be able to pretend that the the City of Peoria is being served by the state agencies into which city residents pay their taxes, Instead, all I see are reminders that we are the servants, and the state is our master:
[...]

Local: Library vote likely to be deferred

At-large city council member Ryan Spain will likely ask the Peoria City Council for a two-week deferral on the vote on whether to proceed with plans to issue bonds for a $23 million bond to renovate and build facilities for the Peoria Public Library system.
As I’ve previously reported, the council seems evenly divided on this [...]

Politics: Andy Martin is a power to be reckoned with

The defeated U.S. Senate candidate thinks mighty highly of his litigious powers:
‘LaHood was the ‘Combine’s’ designated front-man to maintain control of the ‘honest graft’ generated by the party. But LaHood obviously had no taste for a knock down, drag out battle for the committeeman’s slot, so he quit. The battle continues.
Whatever, Andy. The windmills are [...]

Local: Debbie Wolfmeyer is useless (UPDATED)

If you thought Linda Butler’s hemming and hawing was infuriating, get a load of this letter that board member Debbie Wolfmeyer sent to Diane Vespa (by way of C.J. Summers):
Mrs. Vespa - I must respectfully decline your invitation to meet with you. It is not my role as a Board member to meet with individuals [...]

Today’s news: Moons and ’shrooms

Links via the Journal Star’s spiffy new Web site:

Apparently, Chillicothe is a good place to look for mushrooms. Who knew? Well, the morel the merrier, I say ,…
This is not a fun way to get mooned.
I did this story about Hispanic and Mexican immigration in the East Bluff about three years ago. And there’s also [...]

Politics: Lyons can’t explain away his absence from task force

Darin LaHood has promised to participate in the City of Peoria’s Crime Task Force is he is elected state’s attorney in Peoria County. The current holder of that office, Kevin Lyons, has refused. LaHood reiterated that promise at a recent event, and the Journal Star dutifully contacted Lyons for his reply:
“This task force thing has [...]

The reason for the feast

I thought I’d take a minute from eating all this wonderful BBQ to post a note of thanks to America’s veterans and active military for their service and sacrifice.

Politics: Moderation takes a setback as LaHood exists race for RNC

Another benefit to the Journal Star’s new post-the-articles-on-as-they-come-in policy is that Bernie Schoenburg’s column and articles come in sooner. That includes this piece reporting that Peoria’s one and only congressman, Ray LaHood, decided to not run for Republican National Committeeman from Illinois. Instead, he’s going to visit Lebanon to help promote democracy there.
My two cents: [...]

Local: D150 board member ducks the primary school question

Linda Butler managed to duck out of this month’s Peoria School Board meeting, thus avoiding having to cast a vote on whether to cut 45 minutes of instructional time for primary school students not lucky enough to go one of District 150’s pet schools.
But the fine folks at Word on the Street cornered Butler to [...]

Verbatim: Jerry Smith, Journal Star online editor

On a whim, I thought I’d see if Jerry Smith (right), the online editor at the Peoria Journal Star, would agree to answer a few email questions about his job and the future of online journalism. I wouldn’t have blamed him had he declined. After all, reporters are sometimes hesitant to put themselves under microscope. [...]

Today’s News: Being there

Unless otherwise noted, all links via the Journal Star:

The Associated Press is reporting that U.S. Ray LaHood of Peoria was among a group of U.S. officials who attended the vote that elected Lebanon’s new president. The U.S. wasn’t happy that this particular guy was elected, as it was part of a deal brokered by Iran.
Loucks [...]
