Bad news coming for GateHouse employees

May 12, 2009
By Billy Dennis

From Dan Kennedy’s Media Nation blog:

Media Nation is picking up reliable buzz that GateHouse Media, which owns some 100 community newspapers in Eastern Massachusetts, will be announcing significant downsizing moves in the very near future.

For those who don’t read Peoria Pundit regularly, GateHouse Media also owns the Peoria Journal Star, the Peoria Times-Observer, the Pekin Times, the Galesburg Register Mail and just about every daily and weekly newspaper in this part of the state.

And they just posted big first quarter revenue declines.

  1. Not Puzzled Why They Are Broke. on May 12, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Anyone in charge at Gatehouse? Last night at a high school baseball game they had TWO reporters working the game. One from the PJStar and one from the local weekly. I observed worse use of limited resources at the coverage of the recent “tea party’ demo. TWO PJStar picture takers covering the same event. Is it any wonder they are where they are. In the past they made money in spite of this stupidity . No place for me to invest.

Are you sure both JS photogs were taking stills? The paper often sends a videographer — often Adam Gerik — to shoot video, too. Everyone should be happy the JS isn’t trying to get one person to do both.

It was fun being “Anonymous” for one post, but that was me.

I did see Adam shooting video at the tea party, and Leslie shooting stills.

That is the problem — check out the video — only 750 views as of minutes ago on a month old video and I bet a lot are repeats that came from people and family in the video. Yes, Gatehouse is searching for a new model but you certainly don’t have to try it in all markets to find the best one. Again, in years past they made money in spite of the poor management of resources when they owned the only “printing press” in town.

And with the HD camcorder they could have pulled an image from it with good enough quality for the web and tree killing version. No fast action needed captured in poor light. Just look at the WMBD and WEEK for examples of stills from HD video.
