‘Catch-and-Release’ Kevin still siding with the bad guys

Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis wants to give Peorians the right to carry a concealed weapon, a right enjoyed by citizens in 48 states.

Naturally, Peoria County State’s Attorney Kevin “Catch and Release” Lyons is opposed:

In his own words:

“Neither of the words ‘concealed’ nor ‘carry’ should give a community any greater sense of peace when it comes to loaded firearms,” Lyons said. “No workable plan has yet been discovered that puts guns in the hands of law-abiding persons to the exclusion of the mentally unstable or the angry malcontent.”

Oh, brother.

And there’s a law that takes guns OUT of the hands of law-abiding citizens and that also takes them out of the hands of those otherwise inclined to use a handgun to rob, rape and murder?

‘I was going to shoot that gas station attendant, but I’d have to hide the gun under my shirt on the way there, so I guess I can’t do it.’

Lyons continues to side with the criminals.

Lyons is a moron, he just made the case for why there should be no gun laws.

“No workable plan has yet been discovered that puts guns in the hands of law-abiding persons to the exclusion of the mentally unstable or the angry malcontent.”

Here is essentially the argument Lyons made with a couple edits showing how stupid a line a argument it was based on his opinion:

Neither of the words ‘gun bans’ nor ‘restrictive gun laws’ should give a community any greater sense of peace when it comes to loaded firearms. No workable plan has yet been discovered that keeps guns out of the hands of of the mentally unstable or the angry malcontent.

Billy, while I empathize that you once lived close to the location of the unfortunate homicide on Prospect Wednesday night, I wouldn’t assume a concealed carry would have stopped that situation until the final story comes out, hopefully. Your attitude towards Mr. Lyons is obvious, fine, I’m not against concealed carry at all, I might even carry if it was legal, but Mr. Lyon’s point is more guns out there is not NECESSARILY the answer. I’ve seen the results of the 48 of 50 concealed carry states and they do vary. Crime can go down in conceal carry states, but if you look at some states’ stats, there isn’t much change.. And major crimes in Illinois are down and in Peoria too without the conceal carry law if you believe ISP and FBI figures. Before, I get hammered on by commenters, I do not disapprove of conceal carry, I just understand Mr. Lyons argument, too. Are Liberatarians against tolerance of free speech and opinion, or only if it agrees with their opinion? Just wondering.

So according do the above comment, permitting conceal carry can either lower the crime rate, or have no impact. OK. Then bring on conceal carry!

It makes sense that one of the most corrupt governments in the country (Illinois) does not want the citizens to arm themselves.

Here is a complilation of some of the research supporting the premise that concealed carry rights translate to reduced crime rates.

This would be a great opportunity for our local representatives to demonstrate that they can and will challenge their Chicago counterparts on behalf of their downstate constituents.

It seems to me there was a lot of defeatist language being used in the PJStar article today, such as:

“Ardis has local support for it, although state Sen. Dale Risinger, R-Peoria, and state Sen. Dave Koehler, D-Peoria, are skeptical about any pro-gun proposal that might be met with resistance by Chicago area politicians.

“They don’t get too excited about gun bills in Chicago,” Risinger said.

They need to quit worrying and get doing!

more guns will equal more deaths and more injuries.

Nothing good can come of this.

  9. diane on May 29, 2009 at 9:27 pm

Tulip- the stats do not bear that out.

    Btw, where ya been?

“No workable plan has yet been discovered that puts guns in the hands of law-abiding persons to the exclusion of the mentally unstable or the angry malcontent.””

And obviously, Lyons has “No workable plan that has yet been discovered that gets guns out of the hands of law-breaking persons”. Until he does that, might as well arm everyone and make the playing field even.

the problem is not guns, it is criminals. seeing as we already incarcerate more people than any nation EVER we have to come up with new solutions. realizing that class is the new race is a start. reinvesting in education is the solution. more and better teachers is how we solve this problem.

  12. diane on May 30, 2009 at 7:55 am

Anyone who is defenselessly gunned down should hold our state legislature responsible for their death due to the fact that they were unable to defend themselves. We need some class action…

  13. no more guns on May 30, 2009 at 9:57 am

Horrible idea, and honestly, this will do NOTHING to stem crime. In fact, do it, Mayor, and you’ll see a rise in crime. I can’t believe anyone with a brain wants more guns on the street. 11bravo, by your moniker, you are an old Army guy Super. you have training. Most people are idiots. You should know that. Do you really want Joe Public with guns/

And you blame Lyons. What about the cops who aren’t in favor of this? Are they “catch and release” as well. Come on. If you want to stop gun violence, come down harder on the guys with guns. Don’t arm the public to the point where everyone is packing.

Again, people are riding on emotion. Fine. Arm the public. you’ll see in a few months or years that it’s a horrible idea. This will pass. People will rush out to buy their permits. Super. One or two people will get shot while committing crime and people will say “bully for them.”

Next thing up is public hangings. I am appalled, really, as the utter lack of common sense.

“Next thing up is public hangings. I am appalled, really, as the utter lack of common sense.”

I amcompletely appaled that you would suggest I am in favor of public hangings.

I favor public beheadings. Then, we could stick the heads on a pike in the courthouse square.

  15. 11Bravo on May 30, 2009 at 12:28 pm

no more guns, the stats that Diane has posted here and that I have seen elsewhere prove you wrong so unless you can show otherwise your expert opinion on the effect of concealed carry is irrelevant.

Also, I’m not that old. And I don’t want “Joe Public” with a gun I want people who pass background checks and training courses to be able to do so which is how concealed carry works in a number of states.

You’re right though in the notion that people are riding on emotion, but you are wrong in what group it is. The emotional ones are the anti concealed carry who make broad statements about the impact more guns will have without any proof to back it up like Lyons and yourself. People who are anti concealed carry are typically afraid or inexperience with firearms themselves which is fine but that shouldn’t prohibit the rest of the population who wants to exercise their 2nd amendment rights.

And Billy, heads on a pike would really change the atmosphere during all of those lunch time public school singing programs they put on in the square.

  16. diane on May 30, 2009 at 1:58 pm

“And Billy, heads on a pike would really change the atmosphere during all of those lunch time public school singing programs they put on in the square.”

You mean for better, or worse?

  17. Billy Dennis on May 30, 2009 at 2:48 pm

11Bravo: Yes, it sure would change the atmosphere.

A visual reminder that armed robbers and their ilk would end up this way might make people feel safe enough to visit Peoria’s downtown.

Personally, the thought gives me a warm glow.

Wisconsin is an open carry state, has the crime moved one way or the other? Do not know just asking.

My son is a trucker and he says, he has talked to a lot of highway patrol men and most of them favor the conceal law.. Our crime rate has gone up and its time to make a move on it. People can’t even walk the streets without some one coming up on you.. Alot of older people won’t go out after dark..
