(July 9, 2009) – Due to the many construction projects and changes on the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center main campus, a new road is being built to replace the current Berkeley Avenue (the road that runs in front of the OSF Saint Francis Emergency Department).

Beginning Tuesday, July 14th, until further notice, there will be several major changes to traffic flow around the OSF campus.

  • All traffic entering the campus from the north end of Berkeley Avenue will be shifted to the “new Berkeley Avenue.”
  • Both northbound and southbound traffic will share the future southbound lanes on the new Berkeley.  This will be a tight squeeze until the old Berkeley can be removed between the existing Armstrong and the existing Pennsylvania Street intersections.
  • All traffic related to parking in the North Parking Deck, the lab or interior campus buildings east of Berkeley on Armstrong will be required to use a temporary roadway between the existing Armstrong/old Berkeley intersection and the new Berkeley Avenue.
  • Drivers need to be aware of changes in stop sign placement and removal of stop signs in the northern and western parts of the campus.
  • Access to the OSF Saint Francis Emergency Department will be maintained throughout the construction.

Visitors and others who need to get to the North Parking Deck can do so from Glen Oak Avenue to Armstrong from the east, or by taking Pennsylvania Avenue past Berkeley to Missouri or New York, then turn right down to Armstrong and approach the deck from the east.

Drivers are advised to be careful when driving through this road construction. Traffic may be congested but the result of the construction will allow for better traffic flow in the future.
