These two stories are completely unrelated

Bad news for people who count on their job at Caterpillar to pay their bills:

Thousands of Caterpillar Inc. employees will be either on vacation or temporarily laid off in the Peoria area over the next two weeks, the company confirmed Friday.

Too bad folks. I’m sure the band won’t mind you missing a payment.

But all is not lost. There’s at least one Cat retiree who is still plugging away, making ends meet with the occasional odd job.

Former Caterpillar Inc. engineer Mark Johnson will oversee preparation and construction meetings for the county during the Peoria Riverfront Museum development.

The Peoria County Board on Thursday voted 15-1, with Merle Widmer dissenting, to hire Johnson at $50 per hour, not to exceed 10 hours a week, through this year. In 2010, the County Board will revisit the agreement.

Good for you, Mark. Now you won’t have to take that job as a door greater at Wal-Mart.

AND…Mr. Johnson was allowed to take the generous Cat severance package MONTHS after the deadline that Cat would not budge on for ANYONE else. Lucky guy will NEVER have to be a Wal-Mart greeter!

Me, on the other hand, is a different story.
