The no-layoff agreement that has been in effect since February between the Newspaper Guild, which represents newsroom and outside circulation employees, and the Journal Star expires at the end of March. The union achieved this deal by forgoing its 3 percent 2009 contract raise. People are apprehensive about the end of the agreement, especially after veteran non-union staffers were cut a couple weeks ago.
The Monday paper is the least profitable edition at most dailies, and a few have eliminated it. I am not sure if any GateHouse papers have.
I’ve heard nothing about the elimination of the Monday paper, either. Predicting layoffs at any newspaper in this day and age is kind of like predicting that it will be warm in July.
