Congressman Aaron Schock has posted a list of his appropriation requests — i.e. “earmarks,” i.e. “pork” — on his Website. Among the highlights (or lowlights, depending on your point of view):
Peoria Mental Health Court: $500,000
To alleviate the overcrowded jail system by diverting mentally ill offenders into the help they need.
The entity to receive funding...

Liveblogging: Peoria City Council
Note: The following is the equivalent of notes taken in real time during a meeting of the Peoria City Council. Unless you see quote marks, assume that what you are reading is paraphrasing.
It’s crowded in here. Two groups of Boy/Cubs/Tiger Scouts to give the pledge.
Lots of proclamations. First up, Arbor District Presentation to...

Local: Bring a pillow and a pot of coffee to next week’s city council meeting
It’s going to be a long one Tuesday. The City Council meeting starts at 6:15 p.m. and immediately begines with a presentation and FIVE proclamations. There are 22 items in the consent aganda (some of which are bound to be pulled out and discusses at length). Councilmember Jim Montelongo is asking the council to...

The Uplanders are revolting!
Check out the comments in C.J.’s open thread from yesterday. It seems some members of the Uplands Residential Association are upset with those running the organization. It seems they thing the group isn’t doing enough to keep homes from being converted into non-residential use, and in fact declined to oppose a local church that’s...

LaHood to head up hilltop?
I awoke to find the Web filled with news reports that Ray LaHood is pondering applying for the job of president of Bradley University.
I have several thoughts on the subject:
I doubt LaHood would openly speculate about this if he didn’t have a pretty good idea that he’d be chosen if he decided to apply....

Peoria City Council: 5-22-2007
Here is the transcript so far. Start from the bottom:
7:44 p.m.
BeanCounter : it was stressing me out to watch him
BeanCounter : he should not have to be putting up this defense
Billy Dennis : Cat is not backing it behind the scenes, so passage is not likely.
Billy Dennis : The in-flight velocity of a coconut-laden...

Today’s news: Snitched
Some Friday morning news to keep you amused. All links via the Peoria Journal Star:
The Journal Star editorial page notes the massive profit taking. Trouble is, the edit seems to call for action by the legislature, but isn’t clear what action it should take, since the edit opposes a freeze. In other words, it’s...

A little late to define the institutional use ordinance, isn’t it?
The big news from tonight’s Peoria City Council meeting isn’t that the council voted to approve changes in Bradley University’s institutional plan. They did. Unanimously. 10-1 No surprise, there.
The news from the meeting is that 2nd District Councilwoman Barbara Van Auken promised to bring to a vote an official, enforceable definition of “institutional use”...

Another foul stench from the hilltop
Some developers had a novel idea: Instead of tearing down all those lovely old homes along Maplewood Avenue that otherwise would be demolished in order to satiate Bradley University urge to build spiffy new facilities for students, my not move them to Elmwood? According to JS columnist Terry Baker, it’s because BU says it...

As predicted, JS endorses Aaron Schock, and as predicted, the piece is full of half-truths, omits key details and deliberately misinforms readers
I knew from before he announced he was going to run against Aaron Schock (R.-92nd Ill House) that the Journal Star was going to come after Bill Spears*, both on the news pages and even more so on the editorial page. So I wasn’t surprised at the smarmy little comments they tossed his way...

BU-area parking is going to get worse before it gets better, and probably not even then
I’m not opposed to the project, per se. I wish the older homes on Maplewood were staying, but BU paid for them on the open market and the owners were compensated. So eminent domain isn’t an issue, as I once worried would be the case.
But I’m not certain that Bradley University is doing enough...

BU expanding to Western Avenue? Been there, reported that
Armond Ciota on the end of his personal battle with Bradley University over the institution’s hunger for property:
“We six homeowners on Maplewood banded together and gave Bradley a proposal they couldn’t resist,” Ciota said last week. “The Arbor District is pretty much down to two streets. Bradley is going to keep going west. Bradley...

Glen Oak Park history headed for the dust bin
Above: An old colorized postcard shows the original Old Spanish Cannon that protected Glen Oak Park Lagoon from naval invasion. Karrie Alms says the entire structure is going to be torn down.
This RALLY Peoria post from Karrie Alms is more than a week old, but it’s still relevant.
She writes about the many, many features...

BU in a state of non-denial denial about expansion
Bradley the headline about the Bradley Scout article — BU officials say posted map is inaccurate — I couldn’t find a single word that denied what I’ve been writing:
A map recently published in the Peoria Pundit blog detailing Bradley’s 15-year plan for campus expansion and improvements bears some relevance, said Vice President for Business...

BU plans to exploit neighborhood
Sometimes I’m so smart I scare myself. A week ago, I predicted that Bradley University was going to use its surprising victories in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament to raise money for new facilities on campus, and this was bad news for neighbors in the nearby Arbor District. I took a huge amount of...

Kiss Maplewood Avenue goodbye
Yep. Take a look at this map (huge pdf file) showing that it wants to do during the next 10-15 years. Bradley University already owns the east side of Maplewood Avenue from West Main Street to West Bradley. The plans include including tearing out all those lovely old homes on the west side of...

BU success may mean bad news for its neighbors
“Valley-dation?” Hardly.
The Bradley University men’s basketball team is now one of the top 16 teams in the nation … at at least one of the top 16 teams among the 64 picked by the NCAA to be in the tournament.
I’m listening to Dave Snell and Dan DiOrio on WMBD1470 and … let’s just say...

City Hall needs to step up, find its manhood, and defend residents against Bradley University
Jennifer Davis and Molly Parker have a decent Word on the Street column today. It’s about people with varying degrees of success in fighting City Hall.
Technically, residents of the Arbor District aren’t fighting City Hall, but Bradley University, which is buying up property in their neighborhood. As I”ve recently learned first-hand, BU believes...

New Peoria photos!
I’ve just uploaded a bunch of my photos to my Flickr site. I’ve even gone to the trouble of adding cutlines.
