I thought I was in store for a puff piece when I saw this headline: City Councilman leads effort to brand region.
But Peoria Journal Star reporter John Sharp actually made some phone calls and got some balance for his article on Peoria City Councilman Ryan’s Spain efforts to “brand” the city.
I like this graph:
“You...

Usually, I report on the drama going on here on Randolph Avenue.
This morning, I was the cause.
I found a notice from the city on my car windshield yesterday:
PARKING BAN FOR SEALCOAT WORK.
PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON THIS STREET BETWEEN THE
HOURS OF 7:00 A.M. AND 5:00 P.M. UNTIL AFTER IT
HAS BEEN SEALCOATED. VIOLATORS MAY BE...

I’m working this evening, and my morning and early afternoon are taken up by Blog Peoria Project business. Member bloggers might want to read this important post.
Anyway, do check out Word on the Street. Apparently, there’s something Barbara Van Auken hasn’t been telling me.

Someone’s posted a rumor that Barbara Van Auken is considering a run for mayor of Peoria. Naturally, some other names are being thrown out there. I have NOT discussed this issue with Councilwoman Van Auken, but I doubt she’d run against Mayor Ardis. Lets just toss another name into the mayoral mix: At large...

Today’s links via the Journal Star:
The Journal Star got around to reporting on the financial disclosure statement filed by 18th District Congressional Candidate Jim McConoughey. That’s good. Better late than never, I say.
I was amused at how the link to the article was displayed on the JS Web site:
Heh. You would think a guy...

Lack of funding for district projects had two district council members demanding changes at the Peoria City Council’s first meeting over the 2008 budget.
Barbara Van Auken was angered that the preliminary $22 million capital improvement budget had no funding for the Sheridan Triangle facade improvement program in her 2nd District. It was especially galling...

Journal Star: Word on the street reports that 2nd District City Councilwoman Barbara Van Auken will introduce an amendment exempting used book stores from the ordinance that regulates pawn shops.
My two cents: I enjoyed this quote from Police Chief Steve Settingsgaard:
“Enforcement activities must be prioritized, and those priorities must be based upon areas of...

I had a hard time keeping a straight face during tonight’s council meeting.
During the “new business” section, At-Large council member Gary Sandberg came up with an idea to accomplish two tasks with at once.

Forgive me for the lateness of this post. The council meeting lasted way longer that it should have. If the quality of a democracy is measured in the amount of time we let politicians and the public repeat themselves in front of a microphone, then Peoria has the healthiest damn democracy in Illinois. Jesus,...

Nothing in this article changes my original prediction. The water buyout will pass by one vote:
Yes: Sandberg, Grayeb, Manning, Van Auken, Gulley and Spears.
No: Ardis, Nichting, Morris, Turner and Jacob.
Chase presented a good argument for a landslide in favor. But that 82 percent referendum will weight on their minds. I don’t see it passing...

The Peoria County Board decided Thursday to get involved in city politics last week. Considering all the bickering between the city and county governments recently, it might appear to be meddling. But this time, it’s a good thing. The board voted 16-0 to urge Bradley University to meet with leaders of the Uplands and...
