Sports: Luciano jumps on soccer bandwagon

Phil Luciano has jumped on the Bradley University Soccer bandwagon. He admits it. He doesn’t care. He finds the whole three-victories-away-from-a-national-championship thing absolutely riveting: Saturday night at home, with the team playing in Maryland, I kept dashing to my computer, desperate for updates. College soccer scores are hard to find, especially mid-game. And when...

Today’s news: Open for business

November 13, 2007
By Billy Dennis

Today’s links via the Peoria Journal Star: Repairs are done at the McClugage Bridge. If I ever used that bridge, I’d be ecstatic. Bradley University is investigating what happened at the sorority talent show that led to the dangerous street brawl. No doubt BU is deeply concerned about student safety. Heaven forbid that something would happen...

Local: Bad singing, dancing causes brawl (UPDATED)

November 10, 2007
By Billy Dennis

The headline says Talent show spawns brawl. What happened was that a Bradley University sorority held a talent show, and some “youths” out in the parking lot started fighting and wouldn’t stop, so the police had to use pepperball guns to break them up. So I would say that the brawl wasn’t spawned by...

Local: BU students upset over tickets

October 29, 2007
By Billy Dennis

Peoria Anti-Pundit did some citizen journalism and discovered that Bradley University students are being ticketed — by campus police. This supposedly includes tickets for jaywalking. And they aren’t happy about it. Do BU police officers have the power to ticket BU students for jaywalking across West Main Street and University? If so, good.

Media: She’s back … ?

OMG! Be still my heart! If Jenny Davis back on the beat? It’s been about a month since Jenny left the City Council beat and Word on the Street to take a job as editor of one of those silly sections the JS prints that I never read. She did it because let her...

Local: Two links for C.J.

October 19, 2007
By Billy Dennis

Citizen journalist C.J. Summers went to last night’s forum on the school siting issue, and has a comprehensive report on his site. It is well-written and is far less biased and condescending that the brief Journal Star report. Concerned citizens are going to need more online journalism like this as GateHouse continues to turn...

Today’s news: Out on the town

October 19, 2007
By Billy Dennis

Unless noted, all links are via the Journal Star: If this “GateHouse News Service” report on how Insight Cable is going to carry some Bradley University basketball games is anything other than a press release, I’ll eat my fictional season tickets. What? No one was available in the JS newsroom to make a phone call...

Local: Protestors make their case against Peoria Police

October 13, 2007
By Billy Dennis

I attended the protest outside Peoria Police Department headquarters this morning. Rather than rabble-rousers out to play the race card and demand special treatment for black people, I met and talked to people who sincerely believe that the ‘Manual 22′ case is yet another instance of racial profiling. Several people I talked to or...

BU in search of something that offends no one

December 7, 2006
By Billy Dennis

Bradley University, in order to appease the self-appointed Guardians of Sensitivity, has to come up with a new mascot, preferably one that doesn’t wear a feather or wave a tomahawk around. They’ve even got a Website to conduct an online survey. Really? An online naming contest? Do I sense another the “Amazasploraportaseum on the...

Phil Luciano isn’t long for the Journal Star

August 8, 2006
By Billy Dennis

There’s no way in Hell the powers-that-be will allow Phil Luciano to continue working for Peoria’s one and only daily newspaper after the spot-on slap-down he delivered today about the $65 million Museum Square project: Think of it this way: Peoria is about the same size as Allentown, Pa.; Evansville, Ind.; and Waterbury, Conn. Would...

BU in a state of non-denial denial about expansion

March 31, 2006
By Billy Dennis

Bradley the headline about the Bradley Scout article — BU officials say posted map is inaccurate — I couldn’t find a single word that denied what I’ve been writing: A map recently published in the Peoria Pundit blog detailing Bradley’s 15-year plan for campus expansion and improvements bears some relevance, said Vice President for Business...

BU plans to exploit neighborhood

March 29, 2006
By Billy Dennis

Sometimes I’m so smart I scare myself. A week ago, I predicted that Bradley University was going to use its surprising victories in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament to raise money for new facilities on campus, and this was bad news for neighbors in the nearby Arbor District. I took a huge amount of...

Did Grandview closure make it harder on BU students?

February 8, 2006
By Billy Dennis

Did the city’s closure of a Peoria hotel worsen the concentration of student housing on Peoria’s Wst Bluff? Maybe so: Some students may have noticed flyers around campus advertising “flexible short or long term housing” in “an upscale neighborhood” as being “one of the quietest and safest residential experiences in Peoria.” The flyers, advertising Peoria’s Grandview...
