Seriously. Lyons told HOINews he’s sick of crack houses, so he’s filed complaints that could get six of the houses forfeited. And, boy, he’s soooo mad, he might file more.
This is classic Lyons.
First, Peoria’s neighborhood leaders have been begging Lyons to get tough, but he usually clucks his tongue and says no one else...

Politics: 20 years later, Lyons discovers Peoria has a problem with crack houses
Today’s news: Getting schooled
Some links via the Journal Star:
The woman who found (the horrors!) a long brown hair on a pretzel has had her butt sufficiently kissed by the company CEO. Hundreds of people have been killed in Tibet, the nation’s economy is tanking, and Terry Bibi Baker devoted two columns to a a hair on a...

News: Another 2nd Amendment success story
Two practicing socialists decide to put their share-the-wealth philosophy into action with a knife. Unfortunately for them their target was a WWII vet who’s a big John Wayne fan and who happened to be packing heat.

Local: Lyons is talking tough, making excuses again (UPDATED)
Peoria County State’s Attorney Kevin Lyons says that the guy who got arrested and charged with raping a girl two weeks ago is also guilty of three other similar assaults.
Monterius Hinkle was already in jail on charges he raped a 16-year-old Trewyn Middle School student on Jan. 16 when he was hauled before a...

News: Heroes walk among us … in spandex
I find this oddly comforting:
BY MOST OBSERVERS‘ RECKONING, between 150 and 200 real-life superheroes, or “Reals” as some call themselves, operate in the United States, with another 50 or so donning the cowl internationally. These crusaders range in age from 15 to 50 and patrol cities from Indianapolis to Cambridgeshire, England. They create heroic...

Politics: My lunch with Darin LaHood
I ate lunch with Peoria attorney and would-be Peoria County State’s Attorney Darin LaHood the other day. We met for lunch at Kelleher’s. He had the turkey club, I had the corned beef sandwich. I guess I’m more in touch with my Irish side than he is, especially since he’s of Lebanese ancestry.
(FULL DISCLOSURE:...

Local: Is there a calculator anywhere in the newsroom?
The subhead in today’s crime blotter article reads: “Almost $1 million in drugs seized in Peoria bust.” Unfortunately, the facts in the article are less spectacular:
When agents moved in on the trio, they reportedly found 989 grams of powder cocaine, with a street value of about $98,900, that the men were exchanging. Police declined...

Today’s news: Arresting news
Links via the Journal Star:
Sometimes I really think the Journal Star headline writers have no idea how their work is being perceived. For example: “Hyde a ‘distinguished’ servant.” Do we really need the quotes marks for one word? Apparently the “editors” do.
Well, thank God we now know what the “top priorities” are each...

Today’s news: Getting tough on landlords
Links via the Journal Star, unless noted:
Once again, evil railroad tracks have lured someone into the path of an oncoming locomotive device. This time, it’s a pickup track that collided with a track sweeper.
Speaking of rail, blogger C.J. Summers blisters the Journal Star for its illogical opposition to running the Rock Island Trail next...

Local: Answering questions about a lost person
Kudos to Journal Star crime reporter Leslie Fark for answering some of the questions I had about the woman who was found dead in the woods in Creve Coeur. Teresa M. Reeves had been missing for weeks, and no family member or friend had reported her missing. It turns out her live was filled...

Guest post: Crime rate woes rooted in domestic violence
I recently attended a program sponsored by the Family Violence Coordinating Council and the Center for Prevention of Abuse. The featured speaker was Casey Gwinn, former chief prosecutor of the City of San Diego and a leader in the effort to coordinate responses to domestic violence. He made a very compelling argument...

Politcs: Profiles of LaHood, Lyons reveal differences in style and substance
The Peoria Times-Observer last week profiled the two candidates for Peoria County State’s Attorney, incumbent Kevin Lyons and challenger Darin LaHood. Both articles were, I thought, fair. I can’t link to them because the PTO doesn’t post articles on its Website. I’d post them in .pfd format, but I don’t want to go beyond...

Media: Another municipal geography lesson
Really, I don’t want to discourage any media organization from covering neighborhood issues in Peoria. And the reporter involved in a very lovely person. But I have to scratch my head at a report saying that an East Bluff neighborhood is creating a community watch organization when the participants live on West Virginia Avenue....

About last night …
I don’t have a lot of time to post today, I here are some bullet points from last night’s Peoria City Council meeting:
1. The East Bluff must feel like a red-headed step child. One week, they are told that their neighborhood will be the first to be installed with the city’s spiffy new wireless...

Needed: A touchy-feely chief of police
Journal Star columnist Pam Adams lived up to her reputation as an apologist for Peoria’s criminals with today’s column on the anecdotal criminal who fathered 11 children with 10 women.
That’s not a criticism, just a nod to reality in a city where the police chief’s focus is so narrow he sees his role as...

More arrests means there’s more being done
The Journal Star reports on the report that Peoria County is record a record number of felony arrests.
My two cents: Good.
Yeah, there’s more violent crime out there. But they are making arrests. The trick now is to get them through the court system, hopefully with the arrestees cooling their heals behind bars.
What obvious to...
