Local: Today’s news links

August 5, 2008
By Billy Dennis

Unless noted, all links are via the Journal Star: The 18-year-old who was found murdered behind Sterling School apparently had an “unconventional relationship” with the man prosecutors say killed her. No kidding. There was an eyewitness to the murder, they say. And she snitched. Apparently she never got the memo saying that Peorians never talk...

Today’s news: Crime, like the Journal Star edit page, is a pain in the ass

October 9, 2007
By Billy Dennis

Today’s news links via the Journal Star: At first, you have to wonder how stupid a former police officer has to be to try to solicit an undercover officer. Then you realize he was fired for misconduct, so the guy obviously lacks impulse control, as do the vast majority of criminals. The reader comments on...

JS worries about the wrong thing in WiFi editorial

January 9, 2006
By Billy Dennis

The Journal Star’s award-winning (snicker) editorial page today urged caution as Peoria considered joining a growing list of communities offering a municipal wireless Internet network: If Peoria wishes to join that crowd, it would behoove City Hall to research which model works best in communities of similar demographics. For now, Peoria seems in no position...

Wishy-washy editorial on booking fees

November 7, 2005
By Billy Dennis

I hate it when the Journal Star does this. They’ve got an editorial in today’s paper addressing the dispute between the City of Peoria and Peoria County over the booking fees the county government charges to hold arrestees before they appear before a judge. The editorial does a good job of summarizing the issues and positions....

Credit where credit is due

October 2, 2005
By Billy Dennis

Today’s Journal Star editorial about bankruptcy reform was well-researched and well-reasoned. Financial institutions lobbied Congress for reforms based on incorrect assumptions. Most of the people who declare bankruptcy do so because of high medical bills, not because of poor lifestyle choices. And the reforms increase legal costs for those least able to afford it....

Laugh all you want Mr. Bailey

September 25, 2005
By Billy Dennis

The Journal Star’s Mike Bailey finally got around to writing about Gary Sandberg’s idea to tax newspaper boxes to pay for maintaining the hanging flower baskets along West Main Street. He says that the newspaper boxes are unpleasant to look at and a potential safety problem, and that gives the city the right...

Ugly little boxes, uglier little lies

September 20, 2005
By Billy Dennis

I had a hard time keeping a straight face during tonight’s council meeting. During the “new business” section, At-Large council member Gary Sandberg came up with an idea to accomplish two tasks with at once.

About that apology …

September 7, 2005
By Billy Dennis

Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis apologized for comments he made about Peoria City Manager Randy Oliver during a meeting Journal Star’s award-winning (snicker) editorial board. Some of his comments ended up reprinted in Monday’s Word on the Street column.

More museum follies

April 28, 2003
By Billy Dennis

In its April 9 editorial, the Peoria Journal Star had this to say about a study conducted on the feasibility of turning over the long-empty Sears block in downtown Peoria for use as a museum of Peoria history. Mayor Dave Ransburg questioned the study’s conclusions and wants a new one (which is exactly what...
