Funniest. Line. Ever.

March 1, 2006
By Billy Dennis

“They can’t vote yet, Councilman Morris.” That was Mayor Jim Ardis to Councilman John Morris who was taking just a bit too long shaking hands with three students from Von Stuben Middle School following their presentation at the start of Tuesday’s Peoria City Council meeting.

Give ‘em Hell, LaVetta

January 30, 2006
By Billy Dennis

Today’s Word on the Street column in the Journal Star takes a look at Mayor Jim Ardis’ ’state of the city” speech. Quite wisely, the column addresses the speech from the point of view of LaVetta Ricca, president of the Old Town South Neighborhood Association.

Peoria will win big if ’state of the city’ plans see the light of day

January 28, 2006
By Billy Dennis

I missed Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis’ “State of the City” speech this week. I’m sorry I did, because it’s obvious that there’s going to be some significant changes in Peoria, and many of them for the better.

Are there secret plans to merge Peoria city and county?

December 1, 2005
By Billy Dennis

I get the most interesting e-mail: Dear Bill, Are you aware of the “private meetings” with the kingmakers regarding a friendly take over and merger by some old friends. The scenario has a few variations but the common thread is the relationship between the mayor, sheriff, some county officials and one or two of Ardis’...

Behind the scenes

September 18, 2005
By Billy Dennis

For those who don’t know, I’m doing the public affairs programming for AAA Entertainment stations here in the Peoria area. I’ve got a recording of my interview with Mayor Jim Ardis from a week ago today here in mp3 format. It’s a large file — it was about 25 minutes — so download at...

About that apology …

September 7, 2005
By Billy Dennis

Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis apologized for comments he made about Peoria City Manager Randy Oliver during a meeting Journal Star’s award-winning (snicker) editorial board. Some of his comments ended up reprinted in Monday’s Word on the Street column.

Fire Station 11 still dividing council

September 1, 2005
By Billy Dennis

According to the Journal Star, Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis and the his brother Tony, president of the city’s firefighter union are feuding over the mayor’s hesitation to reopen Fire Station 11 because of budget concerns. Didn’t the JS editorial page warn us against voting for Ardis because he would essentially be a tool of the...

More water buyout quotes

August 25, 2005
By Billy Dennis

Here’s the last of the direct quotes. I’m still planning a few more posts on the topic. This whole issue raised some specific issues about the future direction of this council.

Water buyout will be narrow

August 18, 2005
By Billy Dennis

Nothing in this article changes my original prediction. The water buyout will pass by one vote: Yes: Sandberg, Grayeb, Manning, Van Auken, Gulley and Spears. No: Ardis, Nichting, Morris, Turner and Jacob. Chase presented a good argument for a landslide in favor. But that 82 percent referendum will weight on their minds. I don’t see it passing...

Reserving judgment on the Guardian Angels

August 15, 2005
By Billy Dennis

The Guardian Angels made its first appearance of its latest attempt to start a chapter here in Peoria. State Rep. Aaron Schock, an East Bluff resident, seems happy to see them come to town. Mayor Jim Ardis seems open to the idea. Myself, I don’t see the big deal. People already are taking matters into their...

Journal Star has excellent 2nd day coverage of campaign spending reports

August 2, 2005
By Billy Dennis

The Journal Star’s Jennifer Davis has an outstanding report on the Ardis/Randburg campaign expenditures and donations. It’s obvious she spent a lot of time pouring through the reports, which weren’t filed until sometime in the afternoon, apparently. It was well worth waiting till 7 a.m. Wednesday Tuesday to read. She also touches on an element...

Ransburg’s lament: ‘Money can’t buy me love’

August 2, 2005
By Billy Dennis

Today was the final day for candidates state-wide to file reports on campaign expenditures. The final results are in from the mayor’s race here in River City: Dave Ransburg spent $237,546 to lose the race for Mayor. His opponent, Jim Ardis, spent $53,824 to win. By my calculations — and please remember that I didn’t...
